Think the occasional cigarette won't hurt? Even a bit of social smoking or inhaling someone else's secondhand smoke could be enough to block your arteries and trigger a heart attack, says the newest surgeon general's report on the killer the nation just can't kick.
Thursday's report says there's no doubt that tobacco smoke begins poisoning immediately as more than 7,000 chemicals in each puff rapidly spread through the body to cause cellular damage in nearly every organ.
"That one puff on that cigarette could be the one that causes your heart attack," said Surgeon General Regina Benjamin. "I advise people to try to avoid being around smoking any way that you can."
...this newest report is unusual because it devotes more than 700 pages to detail the biology of how cigarette smoke accomplishes its dirty deeds including the latest genetic findings to help explain why some people become more addicted than others, and why some smokers develop tobacco-caused disease faster than others.
There is no safe level of exposure to cigarette smoke, whether you deliberately inhale it or are a nonsmoker who breathes in other people's fumes, the report concludes. Nor is there evidence yet to tell if efforts to develop so-called safer cigarettes really will pan out.

Gads, the street should be littered with bodies. This is so ridiculous it’s hard to know where to begin.
What an A**wipe.
To give an idea of how potent cigarettes can be, I was at a party back in ‘73 and we were passing a joint around. Well, someone rolled the ends of a cigarette to make it look like a joint and handed it to me. It was like a red-out only not in the good way. I almost passed out. I did puke my guts out, though.
Oh, and just to go on record, I smoked my last joint in 1977.
I tuned out these Substance Crisis Cretins PERMANENTLY about 20 years ago, when they threw their nonsensical, bullshit machine into high gear to spew the utter bilge that mother’s milk was unhealthy for babies.
Or at least, government credibility.
How much will the government lose by outlawing smokes? It makes more on taxes then the company that makes them.
“but cigars are still safe, right?”
Ask Monica
Which gay lover you talkin' about? I have several.
Nanny state leftists don’t care about the tax revenue, not really. Oh, don’t get me wrong, they’ll tax the SH*T out of anything that moves (to paraphrase King Ronald). But that’s not what really creams their jeans. What gets them off is massive and total control of an entire population’s every waking and sleeping moment. Mannnn! That’s what they LOVE!
So yeah, they’ll lose some tax revenue by ending all smoking but hey, they know where your money is and they’re going to get it all eventually anyway (the way they look at it). In the meantime, what they REALLY want to do is have TOTAL CONTROL OVER YOUR LIFE.
MANNN! That’s LIVING! (To a leftist.)
That fat pig can just STFU
Great idea. I currently manage or co-manage four ping lists. That's enough. If you start one, I'd like to be on it.
Gads, the street should be littered with bodies. This is so ridiculous it’s hard to know where to begin.
Also, many of the LCVTs landing at Normandy on D day opened up only to have all the soldiers already dead from smoking.
Is Nick Nolte dead? I just watched Mulholland Falls (great movie, warning some nudity, sexual content) It was almost ridiculous, but in EVERY (and I mean EVERY) scene Nick Nolte lights another cigarette. He should be dead just from that movie alone, never mind all the drugs and alcohol.
The scientific community's lips are so firmly planted on government's butt that their credibility goes down in sync.
I love Mark Twain! Indeed, the quality of my life declined significantly when I quit smoking and I am in excellent health. Life without small joys is not quality. I miss it tremendously.
One puff is too much!!!!
I hate when I hear BS like, when Pueblo,Co banned smoking, heart disease decreased by 30%. How did they come to the conclusion that banning smoking had ANYTHING to do with it. Heart disease is caused by plaque buiild up in arteries. It doesn’t “reverse”. Plus, did ALL of the people who “would have had heart attacks” spend all their time in bars? Then how the F$#@ do they make the assumption?
I quit smoking four years ago and still miss it from time to time. Like you I really enjoyed it.
