Surgeon general: 1 cigarette is 1 too many
Ass Press via Atlanta Urinal Constipation ^ | December 8, 2010 | LAURAN NEERGAARD

[This has been edited to fit within the excerpting guidelines.]

Think the occasional cigarette won't hurt? Even a bit of social smoking — or inhaling someone else's secondhand smoke — could be enough to block your arteries and trigger a heart attack, says the newest surgeon general's report on the killer the nation just can't kick.

Thursday's report says there's no doubt that tobacco smoke begins poisoning immediately — as more than 7,000 chemicals in each puff rapidly spread through the body to cause cellular damage in nearly every organ.

"That one puff on that cigarette could be the one that causes your heart attack," said Surgeon General Regina Benjamin. "I advise people to try to avoid being around smoking any way that you can."

...this newest report is unusual because it devotes more than 700 pages to detail the biology of how cigarette smoke accomplishes its dirty deeds — including the latest genetic findings to help explain why some people become more addicted than others, and why some smokers develop tobacco-caused disease faster than others.

There is no safe level of exposure to cigarette smoke, whether you deliberately inhale it or are a nonsmoker who breathes in other people's fumes, the report concludes. Nor is there evidence yet to tell if efforts to develop so-called safer cigarettes really will pan out.

Great idea. I currently manage or co-manage four ping lists. That's enough. If you start one, I'd like to be on it.

Gads, the street should be littered with bodies. This is so ridiculous it’s hard to know where to begin.

How absurd? This is ridiculous. Where are the piles of dead bodies? Where are the statistics of 10-14 year olds dropping dead from smoking their first cigarette they stole from mom or dad? I can't remember a single one of my peers dropping dead from this. We all smoked.

Also, many of the LCVTs landing at Normandy on D day opened up only to have all the soldiers already dead from smoking.

Is Nick Nolte dead? I just watched Mulholland Falls (great movie, warning some nudity, sexual content) It was almost ridiculous, but in EVERY (and I mean EVERY) scene Nick Nolte lights another cigarette. He should be dead just from that movie alone, never mind all the drugs and alcohol.

Or at least, government credibility.

The scientific community's lips are so firmly planted on government's butt that their credibility goes down in sync.

"And you never try to find out how much solid comfort, relaxation and enjoyment a man derives from smoking in the course of a lifetime, (and which is worth ten times the money he would save by letting it alone) nor the appalling aggregate of happiness lost in a lifetime by your kind of people from NOT smoking.”

I love Mark Twain! Indeed, the quality of my life declined significantly when I quit smoking and I am in excellent health. Life without small joys is not quality. I miss it tremendously.

I hate when I hear BS like, when Pueblo,Co banned smoking, heart disease decreased by 30%. How did they come to the conclusion that banning smoking had ANYTHING to do with it. Heart disease is caused by plaque buiild up in arteries. It doesn’t “reverse”. Plus, did ALL of the people who “would have had heart attacks” spend all their time in bars? Then how the F$#@ do they make the assumption?

or inhaling someone else's secondhand smoke

They've milked the tobacco industry so now it's time to move on to "secondhand smoke"..............With all the anti-tobacco studies that have been conducted over the past 40 years I find it ironic that they have just now discovered that second hand smoke is allegedly causing problems......

It's called "incrementalism".........

Whatever, the F'n govt. is now free to do what it pleases just so long as it pleases those with their agendas.....

Please pass me a french fry before they're banned and hand me a beer before it's taxed beyond affordability like cigarettes have been........Since the tobacco industry is being tapped out, they're now turning elsewhere to make up the loss in revenues and alcohol and french fries are the current target......LOL!

The very notion of gathering leaves up, drying them out, setting them on fire, and then inhaling the smoke is something that I’ve never considered indulging in.

Go on though, party on.

Thursday's report says there's no doubt that tobacco smoke begins poisoning immediately — as more than 7,000 chemicals in each puff rapidly spread through the body to cause cellular damage in nearly every organ.

I have a problem with anyone who is such an intense acolyte of any obsession, that is colors every word that he/she (the person's name was not deemed important, so that tells me something about the poster, too) says.

Reminds me of the period s few years ago when I spent several weeks researching smoking , and how it attracted self-serving control freaks from random strangers to elected busibodies to presumably serious medical researchers.

The one documented fact that I found educational and contradictory, was that, of the 10 longest-lived recorded human beings of the last few hundred years worldwide, all of them smoked into advanced age, all lived at least to age 105, three smoked until shortly before their death, and five smoked until age 95.

The usual response that they might have lived even longer had they not smoked, I find shaky and unpersuasive.

I suspect these experts have no idea how to explain it, so they'd rather not talk about it.

Three of my grandparents were like these folks you describe:

Grandpa: A coal miner for 50 years, he smoked hand-rolled cigarettes his entire life. Age at death: 96. Cause of death: viral infection leading to sepsis, then organ failure.

Grandma: Housewife and occasional seamstress for Gentex Corporation. Age at death: 96 Cause of death: Renal failure due to diabetes

Nana: Housewife and bank employee. Age at death: 103 (2 weeks shy of 104). Cause of death: Stroke.

My other grandfather died of head trauma after slipping on ice and smacking into the curb. Died suddenly 2 weeks later. He was also a smoker, but died at 51 due to this accident.

It is my opinion that these people should be studied extensively to find out what, exactly, they have in ‘em that prevents them from contracting deadly diseases like heart disease and cancer. ALL of these grandparents did NOTHING that would have met with today’s doctors’ approval. They lived as they wanted, ate and drank what they wanted, and of course, smoked cigarettes too. WHAT protected them? If I was a doctor...I’d want to know.

Regards,

All these nonsmokers sure enjoy our sin taxes though. I wish they would mind their own business. If I want to smoke it is my business & I pay too much for a pack as it is. I am so darn tired of non smokers who are hateful, impolite & rude. If they don’t like it then they can move away from me. I try to not smoke around my nonsmoking friends but am truly tired of their preaching. And yes I am trying to stop but with all the stress in my life it is hard. Nonsmokers or former smokers are some of the rudest people I have ever known.

Yep. Saying that secondhand smoke causes lung cancer is like expecting people to drown if they are close enough to a swimming pool to smell the chlorine.

In my family, sort of the opposite.

My paternal grandmother lived well into her eighties, and so did her sisters. Her baby brother, who was wounded at the Battle of the Bulge, is still around and in good health. Don’t recal if he smokes, but Grammy smoked like a chimney and her sisters smoked. Her parents lived until her Dad was 93 and her Mom was 88. However, my grandfather dropped dead from a heart arrythmia that may have been exacerbated by smoking.

My maternal grandmother also lived well into her eighties, and her Mom died at the age of 93. But my granddad died much earlier (heavy smoker) and only after suffering for more than a decade with lung problems. His sister, a non-smoker, lived well into her eighties.

This anecdotal evidence seems to me to say that some people have a long life span and some don’t, that there are some lifestyle factors, and smoking creams some people quite badly while letting others off the hook.

It’s not too late for any FReepers or normal Americans who believe the Second Hand Smoke canard to buy a pre-planned funeral or burial plot.

Congress' establishment of a national hospital system in 1870 was the Federal government's foot in the door of health care. Now, the whole body's inside.

This policy by the Surgeon General is the polar opposite of that of the Social Security Administration director. The Social Security Administration urges everyone to smoke up. Taking up smoking at an early age greatly decreases your likelihood that you will reach an age to draw Social Security. So rush out and buy a carton today. Uncle Sam needs you to smoke.
