[history]
Early in his administration, President Reagan confidently asserted that "America's best days lie ahead." At the time it was true, but noted economist Thomas Sowell thinks it's no longer the case.
In his new book, "Dismantling America," Sowell argues that this nation is becoming one that many Americans no longer recognize as the country they grew up in or expected to pass on to their children and grandchildren. Rather, like Rome, America may be entering a prolonged period of decline.

My respect for Dr. Sowell is profound. Nevertheless, he has an error in his analysis. He assumes the continued obedience of the citizenry, and the continuity of union.

For what it's worth, my favorite band's latest album (Everything Must Go) is described by Rhapsody as being about "a tanking America" and, having listented to a few of the songs on it, I have to agree that that seems to be Fagin and Becker's point of view. Granted, the album came out in 2003, and doesn't really rise to the standard of their best work.

The whole article is well worth the read. Do not miss the final paragraph. Sowell is a national treasure.

Thomas, I love you.
I know you are not selling Americans short by warning US.
The citizens and not the rulers have always been the strength of this nation.
I know you know this. With God's help the rulers will hear from all of us soon.

I liked the part where the [arrogant] high school senior wrote Dr Sowell a letter explaining economics, the cause of the Great Depression, and the reasons that Obama’s policies are the right ones.
Exactly as he stated - the youth today not only are being taught that anyone that went before them was an idiot (breaking the 5th commandment), but that they have some special knowledge and ability simply by being alive NOW instead of THEN.

People ask me sometimes, "Why do politicians keep making the same mistakes? Don't they ever learn?" And I reply, "They do learn! They learn they can get away with it. That's what they learn."

When I was a year or so out of high school and in uniform I probably thought I knew a lot too but somehow I don’t think I would have thought Obama’s policies were right even then. I remember having a discussion with a shipmate who was an avowed socialist and disagreeing with him totally, then we went and had a beer together. I think the main reason our thinking differed so much is that I grew up on the farm and going in the Navy was a way to get a rest while the socialist lacked that great advantage.

Meck. library doesnt have it yet. I am about half way through Dismantling America. Just so you know, it is a collection of his articles. Jaz's ping list will cover most of the book.
I'd rate this book on the lower end of the Sowell books I've read. Since each article is so short, he doesn't have the page space to get as deep into an issue as he can in his other books. And this one has no footnotes... for those that like to look at source material (or need it when arguing with liberal friends).
