LDS Bishop shot to death in California Church
Salt Lake Tribune ^ | August 29th, 2010 | Associated Press

Posted on 08/30/2010 6:33:31 AM PDT by Jenny Hatch

Visalia, Calif. • A Mormon church official was shot dead between services on Sunday, and less than an hour later, the man suspected of the crime also died after a shootout with police.

Clay Sannar, 42, a lay bishop with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Visalia, southeast of Fresno, died after being shot in his office, said Visalia police chief Colleen Mestas.

Soon after the first shooting, a caller identified himself to police as the shooter. Police responded, and there was a confrontation with several shots exchanged, said Mestas.

The suspect was hit multiple times. He was taken to nearby Kaweah Delta Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. He has not been identified yet. No officers were injured, Mestas said.

Tulare County sheriff’s deputies are taking over the investigation of the shootout involving the police officers. The sheriff’s department did not immediately return calls for comment.

Visalia police continue to investigate Sannar’s shooting, but have not identified a motive.

Now, we have crazed gunmen randomly killing Mormon leaders. Coincidence? I think not...

Do you always go around speculating minus facts?

Did you read the latter posts on this thread where the suspect is somebody who's attended a Mormon church in the past, and has since felt "shunned to hell?" That's "random" in your eyes?

How many shootings @ workplaces like these are ever really "random?" Aren't they usually the result of a just-fired or disgruntled employee?
If that's the "usual" sorry turn of events @ those places of violence, then why were you so quick on the draw to assume and presume "random" or specific hate-laced actions of fringe types?
Isn't that what the MSM likes to jump to -- those kind of quick ill-thought out conclusions?
Isn't that what the MSM did with the Oklahoma City bombing in the 90s?
Has the MSM "trained" you that well?

Are you actually accusing a Free Republic member of murder?

I would ask that just a vile post be stricken but I want it out there for the world to see how desperate (and despicable) the LDS really is.

As for this man, God bless him and his family.

You too Reno?

Are you guys really disparate enough to accuse Freepers of murder or supporting same?

It is a sad testimony to the dearth of moral integrity that is the LDS to say such a thing when it is an out right lie.

You can lie about your beliefs, lie about Mormon history, lie about the intent of your “missionaries, but when you start to spread lies about good people defending Christ for LDS lies and deceit in order to stop the cult from dragging down another soul, that is the work of the Evil One pure and simple.

The Devil smiles with every word you typed.

I would address you like I did the others SD, but you are just a rube, a pawn in the LDS game, and not an active operator. So you ignorant statement is understandable, you are just following the lead of your LDS "betters".

Jordan said it does not appear anyone in the ward knew the shooter, who “is not a member of the church.”

Not even the VICTIM?

You know, as I thought about this statement, and the ones that followed in concurrence I prayerfully realized my reaction was all wrong.

See our LDS “legal team” has come to God's court with their client the Evil One himself in tow, and declared the Moral Bankruptcy of the Latter Day Saints. They have dug down the the most insidious putrid and festering corner of the barrel and scrapped up this despicable argument because there is nothing left.

8/30/2010 is the day.

See my friends victory was assured 180 some odd years ago when the Devil touched the evil mind of a backwoods con man and made him think himself a prophet and begin yet another assault on the Body of Christ. These plans never fully succeed despite sadly dragging some good people into the clutches of Satan. We have 2000 years of evidence to testify to that type of treachery. Today just proved that out yet again.

So as disgusting, deceitful and despicable as these words and the ones that followed in support of them are, it is nothing more than further proof of our victory over the Devils handiwork. It is something to rejoice over, for despite the coming spin these words are utterly indefensible.

So let us sit back and enjoy it as they come and play their ingrained little word games and such trying to get out from underneath this wreckage. We know that they can't help it despite it being in their best interest to just stop while they are behind, it is too deeply rooted in the cult mindset that is part of their training.

Hopefully our deceived friends, after coming face to face with their service to the Evil One, will have a moment of clarity after all these years of being caught up in and defending an evil lie and look up, even for a moment and see the grace and love of the Real Christ, one who, despite them stooping to such a low, will still embrace them when they final turn for home.

God is great indeed.

The Religion Moderator is lurking here - removing any anti-Mormon replies.

It's not the Religion Moderator. Other moderators oversee the news section. The RM is very even-handed in the Religion Forum.

On the contrary, your despicable assertion cheapens much that FR stands for.

"I must’ve hit pretty close to the mark."

Just because I choose to challenge that assertion means nothing of the kind.

You're free to assume what you will, attaching hidden meaning to your comments without having the moral turpitude to come right out and say what you mean is a liberal tactic. Allowing you to act like an ass and hide behind some kind of "plausible deniability".

Mince words, parse sentences all you want. Your kind are the worst kind.

So amateurish, again mags.

Plausible deniability. “I didn’t say that!”

Sure, just making a connection between the possible reason this man was murdered and then directing readers to the RF to see the disagreements posted there, as if those who post against mormonism are advocates of murder.

Uh huh, sure thing, nothing inferred there. Nothing at all.

A hypocrite of the worst kind. Now you call me “deranged”. What are you inferring there mags?

I would have never believed that certain Mormon individuals could be so utterly despicable. To me it shows obedient little mind slaves with no ability to think clearly or even have the honesty to study certain things.

I am not and will never be involved in any organized religion. Mormonism taught me to be just as despicable in certain ways. For that reason I’ll take my chances knowing full well that there is a higher power.

Yesterday I went to the candlelight vigil for Deputy Brian Harris who was shot and killed last week by a fleeing lawbreaker. He was my neighbor, living across the street 100 yards south of here. The killer was a Navajo kid from Fredonia, Arizona. Don’t know his motive. Crazy comes in many forms.

I will celebrate the life of the bishop from Visalia as well as the life of Brian Harris.

So, I'm to silence my disagreement (self-censor) about mormonISM because some loon comes unhinged and takes a life?

"Have you ever hung out in the Religion Forum. I’ve seen people get downright vile there."

Is there any post there that advocates assaulting or murdering a mormon? Any? Just one? Didn't think so, Red Herring.

There is absolutely no proof of any kind that the discussions on FR led to murder. None.

For you to infer that we bear some type of responsibility (or potentially do) for someone else's behavior is ludicrous and a stretch of the imagination.

So, "while you dance around" attempting to silence the opposition to mormonISM here on FR, those who want to see us silenced are sitting back watching supposed conservatives advocate censorship because they don't like the subject material.

Sorry, not buying what you're trying to sell.

Yawn. I inferred nothing. If I thought that anti-Mormons were responsible for the killing of this guy, I would have simply stated: "I believe that anti-Mormon sentiment is probably behind this killing. Just take a look at the RF forum. It's chockful of people with MDS. They are loons." This is the News forum, not the protected area of the RF...you can say what you mean directly with no mincing of words, so no inference is ever necessary...

I'm of the opinion that this guy was probably killed for personal reasons unrelated to being a Mormon.

I'm of the opinion that the MDS nuts are bad for conservatism as well. Give a listen to some progressive radio sometimes...you'll find they are in full agreement with you when it comes to Mormons...magritte

Thanks, now I believe I know where you “stand”, even after having it explained it to you numerous times.

I draw my own conclusions from your comments; “deranged”, “in full agreement” (with liberal radio), got it.

I suppose that it would be no different than accusing LDS FReepers of murder because of the Mountain meadow Massacre which I have yet to see any LDS FReepers condemn.

Since they don’t condemn it, they must agree with it, therefore they are partially responsible for it and capable of the same heinous act today.

Gee, I can use Mormon logic as well. What fun!

You had to know that the FR mormons would jump on this shooting to bring out the "poor persecuted mormons" mantra.

The brother of the man who did the shooting has been quoted as saying he was "shunned to hell" by another mormon bishop.

the church had "shunned him to hell" because of past mistakes.

Painting other FReepers as murderers because we dispute mormon propaganda sounds pretty darned similar to me.

You have hit rock bottom. I called it, and you did it, you even have now LOLed falsely accusing someone of murder.

There is no soul in you, the Devil has it tucked in his pocket.

Hatred? You personify it with your baseless and crude accusations.

Please keep digging that hole, you are doing wonders for the cause against LDS depravity and deceit.

We appreciate the victory, 8/30 is a great date for Truth.
