LDS Bishop shot to death in California Church
Salt Lake Tribune ^ | August 29th, 2010 | Associated Press

Visalia, Calif. • A Mormon church official was shot dead between services on Sunday, and less than an hour later, the man suspected of the crime also died after a shootout with police.

Clay Sannar, 42, a lay bishop with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Visalia, southeast of Fresno, died after being shot in his office, said Visalia police chief Colleen Mestas.

Soon after the first shooting, a caller identified himself to police as the shooter. Police responded, and there was a confrontation with several shots exchanged, said Mestas.

The suspect was hit multiple times. He was taken to nearby Kaweah Delta Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. He has not been identified yet. No officers were injured, Mestas said.

Tulare County sheriff’s deputies are taking over the investigation of the shootout involving the police officers. The sheriff’s department did not immediately return calls for comment.

Visalia police continue to investigate Sannar’s shooting, but have not identified a motive.

I am suprized this is still in “News” and not “Religion”.

Well, I'd call it news because it's cold blooded murder. Even worse, the media is holding back, which makes the whole incident suspicious.

I requested the mods pull the posts that were so blatantly rude to gays and lesbians. Not because I am the queen of Political Correctness, but because I started this thread and some of those comments were so obviously trollish, I did not want them a part of a thread that I started.

Go back and hide under your rocks Freeper Trolls...

Rude in YOUR opinion. Others may not have agreed with you, and those people should be been allowed to say their piece.

"Tolerance" does not exist in bulk. In fact, "tolerance" is nothing but mind control propaganda. People here prefer to think for themselves, and forcing people to think contrary to their beliefs causes hate. Hate creates violence. Violence creates war. That's why free thought needs to be protected - even when you don't necessarily agree with it.

e are in shock!!! I remember President Faust exhorting us to follow the example of the Ahmish - responding with love, kindness, and forgiveness - following the tragic senseless deaths of the little girls at the hands of a crazed killer.

This Bishop leaves behind six boys, the youngest just 3 months old. We will come together to heal. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

It may not have been “personal” with respect to the specific murder victim, but dragging the guy out into a public area before shooting him in the face is very unusual. It might be something “personal” with the Mormon church and not with the specific individual victim.

Police identify alleged gunman in shooting of LDS bishop
[Police] say Kenneth James Ward, 47, shot Bishop Clay Sanner, 40, before Ward was killed in a shootout with police.
...
Ward is from the Modesto, Calif. area, and at one time had family living in the Visalia area. But police said they still don't know why he went to Visalia and shot Sannar.

Man accused of killing church leader was former member of LDS church, felt wronged, brother says

The brother of the man police say shot a church leader Sunday says his brother was mentally ill and felt wronged by The Church of Jesus Christ Latter-Day Saints – a church he was a member of in the 1980s.

Some more details at the link. Mental illness seems to be the cause of this tragedy.

Visalia is 130 miles from Modesto. If the perp drove from Modesto that for the specific pupose of shooting the victim or even any leader at that church, the rest of the story could be very interesting.

This is probably not going to turn out well for the Mormon church. Not going to speculate, but there are a few possibilities that would not surprise me.

Good question. There have been several here on FR that have lauded the massacre of Mormons & Gov. Boggs’ extermination order of Mormons in the 1800’s, saying it was justified. It’s a shame, but I’m quite certain there are some Christian Jahadists here applauding this guys actions. A VERY small minority for sure, but despicably vocal.

How long before they show up here?

Thank you for the name. We were wondering who did it. I am just horrified and in tears. The LDS Community is organizing and will band together to help the family and the community heal. Thanks again.

“This is probably not going to turn out well for the Mormon church. “

What a perfectly horrible thing to say on this day, the day after the great tragedy.

Heavenly Father turns everything around for the good of His people.

Good for you. Makes a lot of sense.

I don't believe that for a second...the other threads have shown a genuine concern by posters and interest in how this happened...especially in light there are six kids without a father now...that is the tragedy here.

No matter what the shooters motive might have been, does not warrent leaving kids without a father. Did he even consider those kids....I doubt it.

..but it is interesting... apparently he phoned the police from a pay phone a mile from the shooting, identifying himself as the shooter 45 minutes after the shooting....and when they arrived he opened fire on them. They took him down. I wonder what was going on those 45 minutes?...

I was just pointing out that this tragedy was probably not going to turn out well for the Mormon church.

If the perp had lived and I was on a jury, I would certainly not hesitate for a second in voting for the death penalty.
