There was a time when 16 year olds were expected to be completely self-sufficient. Thank goodness we have control freaks like you to protect us.

Of course. They sailed all of their lives, taught her to sail at a young age all to get out of debt by sending their daughter on this venture years latter.

Damned brilliant of them and great foresight, the greedy bastards...

Not so long ago, kids younger than this would leave the home to go in search of work to help support their family. It was considered an honorable thing to do.

Nowadays, a young, brave girl, secures a means of supporting her family so that they don’t become welfare recipients.

She makes a bold attempt to sail around the world, gets in trouble due to mother nature and all many here can say is that she and her family are stupid and that the family should lose their kid, and that the girl did it for “ego”, etc., etc., ad nauseum.

Sigh...

They borrowed the money. They are in debt. Dad doesn’t have a job. And now they don’t have any advertising sponsors to foot the bill as they have for the past 3 years.

Come on, even TR would not have argued petty semantics like that, it’s the ageless spirit of the “doer of deeds” he’s talking about. Word meanings are a red herring. It’s pretty telling that old butt sitting critics got showed up by a 16 yr old with the spirit TR is talking about.

Sad to say, we parents have played a big part in neutering our own children.

You’re right of course.

To be safe we should all stay home. Who knows you could have a wreck and endager a fireman or something trying to save you.

So the $50 question is - from her Father's perspective - is a 16 year old girl safer on a boat with a bunch of horny Frenchman than she was alone at sea on a disabled sailboat? /sarc

. Look at the average 20 yr old today, would they, could they, do anything like that?

Do you need a list of the great young men and woman that have died for this country in my life time and the ones that have served with them.

What a foolish statement you have made.. Try to separate the people who are really putting their lives on the line with glory hunting.

There was a time when 16 year olds were expected to be completely self-sufficient.

Back in 1850 when life expectancy was 40 years old and not 77.7. Todays kids are pampered pusses. Comparing them to our ancestors is not accurate.

Not the CHILD who struggles; it is the MAN we should respect.

You are not a fool, but a weasel.

It’s disgusting. And more than a little disappointing.

If the father could sell a Trojan ad and paste it on the side of the French fishing boat, he’d probably be all for it.

I’m sorry. I know there are 20 yr olds like that, they are not the average ones though.

Melodramatic analogy that doesn’t fit. You are comparing everyday life with a foolhardy risk that was unnecessary.

I remember growing up near the ocean and frolicking on the high seas with other poor families in boats like this one

Perhaps T. Coddington Van Voorhees VII could share some of his memories.

“”They are a poor family.
Yes, I remember growing up near the ocean and frolicking on the high seas with other poor families in boats like this one: “”

I wonder what qualifies as poor to the writer - hand to mouth, welfare, government handouts???? They do not live in a part of the LA Basin where poor folks live. Zac, her brother worked to buy his own boat that he sailed around the world in. These kids are being taught everything they need to succeed in life - and not in public schools! Geraldo had a problem with them being homeschooled...Now there’s a barometer to follow.

Abby’s done a great job and anyone can read her blogs and see how efficiently she has handled everything that’s been thrown her way. How many criticizing her can say the same for their own kids?

Life is a risk. Dead five miles from home is just as dead as 5000 mile out. Indeed this young lady with all the equipment, training and such was taking less risk than many 16 year olds take everyday driving while texting or distracted by friends in 4000 pound machines going 60 MPH.

What about this boy? Are any of your thoughts the same about this as they are about the girl? Pray tell, what’s the difference if your thoughts aren’t the same?

What about all the other teenagers and pre-teens who fly? Are they any different or is it just that this girl had a turn of bad luck and now that we can armchair quarterback, we can say how stupid it was?

Interesting comment there considering your other arguments.
