Scientists and Weathercasters at Odds on Warming
New York Times ^ | March 29, 2010 | Leslie Kaufman

Posted on 03/29/2010 3:04:58 PM PDT by reaganaut1

The debate over global warming has created predictable adversaries, pitting environmentalists against industry and coal-state Democrats against coastal liberals.

But it has also created tensions between two groups that might be expected to agree on the issue: climate scientists and meteorologists — especially those who serve as television weather forecasters.

Climatologists, who study weather patterns over time, almost universally endorse the view that the earth is warming and that humans have contributed to climate change. Meteorologists, who predict short-term weather patterns, are not so sure.

Joe Bastardi, for example, a senior forecaster and meteorologist with AccuWeather, maintains that it is more likely that the planet is cooling, and he distrusts the data put forward by climate scientists as evidence for rising global temperatures.

“There is a great deal of consternation among a lot of us over the readjustment of data that is going on and some of the portrayals that we are seeing,” Mr. Bastardi said in a video segment posted recently on the company’s Web site.

Such skepticism is widespread among TV forecasters. A study released on Monday by researchers at George Mason University and the University of Texas at Austin found that only about half of the 571 television weathercasters surveyed believed that global warming was occurring and less than a third believed that climate change was “caused mostly by human activities.”

More than a quarter of the weathercasters in the survey agreed with the statement, “Global warming is a scam,” the researchers found.

The split between climate scientists and meteorologists is gaining attention in political and academic circles because polls show that public skepticism about global warming is increasing, and weather forecasters — especially television forecasters — dominate communications channels to the public

The people who immerse themselves in real-time weather data (not historical reconstuctions) every day are skeptical of global warming.

“Climatologists, who study weather patterns over time, almost universally endorse the view that the earth is warming and that humans have contributed to climate change.”

That is pure BS and destroys his main argument.

I’m surprised that the NYT can calmly discuss the debate without getting hysterical about jailing the ‘deniers’.

Poppycock - the difference is between who is taking money via grants and subsidizing career advancement, and who is a regular working guy with a salary! IMHO

Man that must be frustrating as all get out to the warming cheerleaders. It seems that bad science and the print media ain’t what it used to be. And now we’ve got those pesky meteorologists to deal with. How’s a scammer gonna catch a break?

who uses the weatherman any more? it is straight to the NOAA site where THEY get the same information.

The tv stations should just bring back the bikini weather girl in the clear raincoat and regain their credibility (/s)

The medieval warming period with grape arbors and farms in GREENLAND says it all.

The retreating glaciers disclose homesteads, tilled fields etc. It was MUCH warmer then and THE WORLD DID NOT END.

IPSO FACTO BINGO! ! ! !

(check please)

Why is climatology a “science” and meteorology not? Meteorology makes predictions that are confirmed or falsified. Climatology makes predictions that are forgotten or obsolete before they can be verified. Meteorology is empirical, but climatology is speculative.

Another case of trying to win the word game by calling the ones that the authors agree with scientists but denying that description to the ones that the authors disagree with.

"Climatology makes predictions that are forgotten or obsolete before they can be verified."

I talked with some of these students at Penn State.
We were discussing their future jobs. One gal said, "it's the only profession where you can be wrong 50% of the time and not lose your job".

Real meteorologists have degrees in meteorology and had to take major science and mathematics in college. I had to take Calculus and Calc-based Physics as well as Chemistry, Geology, Biology to get mine.

My University changed their curriculum, dropped Meteorology, and now give out Climatology degrees that do not make a person take any of those science and math classes.

As I look at the new course syllabus I see a bunch of politically correct garbage classes made to look like science but very few classes that have any substance or give a good grounding in science, math and logic.
