KFC diner told 'you can't have bacon in your burger here - we're now halal!'

BURTON-ON-TRENT, UK -- A diner was left furious after a KFC restaurant refused to sell him a bacon burger - because it wasn’t halal.

Alan Phillips was told the restaurant was no longer selling his favourite ‘Big Daddy’ burger, which contains a chicken burger with bacon, cheese and salad, because it had decided to sell only halal food.

The Burton-on-Trent branch is one of the 86 out of 750 British KFC restaurants which is now selling nothing other than halal meat. The company has taken the burger off the menu because Islamic dietary law forbids Muslims to eat anything which has been prepared on the same premises as pork, which is itself strictly forbidden.

It said it was responding to ‘increased demand’ for a halal menu in the areas of Britain with growing Muslim populations.

Sorry to rain on the parade, but it's the free market at work. No government mandate, just a business that makes a market decision based on what it believes its customers want.

Flame away.

No flaming. Just a sad realization of what it represents.

I think in Britian they think any round meat between two pieces of bread is a “burger”. We would just call it a chicken sandwich.

I too weep for England. (/s)

However; I think KFC should be able to optimize their market. If a KFC in a Muslim neighborhood can sell more by dumping pork. Go for it.

But these days you need to watch the overall bottom line, how many sales are lost in response what is seen as knuckling under to the Muslims.

I have to agree with you. I’m just disgusted by it.

Seems like a business decision to me. Restaurant owners should be able to set their own menus. If they anger enough customers they'll have to close their doors. This KFC obviously feels it can sell more food to Muslims than non-Muslims. Seems like a business opportunity for restaurants that serve pork.

I see it as similar to the decision of whether or not to allow smoking in your bar or restaurant. Unfortunately, government has taken the smoking decision away from businesses. Should it do the same with pork?

Remember we have a muslim sympathizer in office, along with a bunch of dhimmicrats who just raped millions of Americans with Obamacare. It wouldn't take anything now to declare pork unhealthy or offensive. Maybe tax the heck out of it.

This is most likely a franchise, which means he has to abide by the franchise agreement. Most franchises are locked into buying food and supplies from a company owned or approved supplier so every franchise has the same logo on the cup, fork, napkin, size portion, taste, products, menu and even range of price.

Imagine if every Miley D's decided what went on the menu. You would drive up and not know what was available.

Some might have sweet corn bread with a side of collard greens according to the local population in some rural place or a "real" tossed salad in SF :)

I have no idea what the UK’s KFC franchise agreement requires. My use of the term “restaurant owners” can also be read as “franchisor.”

It’s still a business decision and my argument applies. I don’t like the Islamization of the U.K. or anyplace else but businesses will do what they think is best to turn a profit.

It's more creeping sharia in EUrabia.

And it's dangerous as every customer is contributing to the halal certification process. Basically paying a muslim tax, the proceeds going to heaven knows what besides "dawah."

Many KFC's outside the US serve (chicken) burgers, and fries. (Home delivery options in Dubai HERE)

They have halal menus in the middle east, and Asia too... when they even serve rice.

Sad to see this expanding in EUrabia.

I think it is common to have common core items shared by the whole chain. Certain franchises may offer experimental or local items although they have to be approved by the corporation. Prices, of course, can vary considerably by region even at McDonalds.

Wow! I had know idea Church's Chicken was owned by an Islamic organization and serves Halal only. I love their chicken, but no more for me.

Chicken burger with bacon and cheese? Well, if I really wanted that and they wouldn’t sell it to me, I would return with my own pound of cooked bacon, order the sandwich, sit down in the middle of the place, and take my time adding my bacon. Eat the sandwich and then just sit there and slowly eat the bacon that wouldn’t fit. Bacon I like, not so much with chicken, though.
