How to save the Earth via the World Wide Web
BBC ^ | 3/5/10

Posted on 03/08/2010 1:03:14 PM PST by Kartographer

There are not many websites which literally give you the chance to protect the world.

Yet, if you are keen on spending a few moments of your day defending the Earth from an imminent solar attack, the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, London would like to hear from you.

Its Solar Stormwatch website highlights the danger of radiation bursts from the Sun - and gives users the chance to help scientists spot Sun storms - known as coronal mass ejections - before they cause damage on Earth.

Solar flares? Pfft. Stop driving SUVs and check in the air in your Prius’ tires and everything will be O.K.!

What??? They just learned of the dangers of a Coronal Mass Ejection? They must have watched the movie “Knowing” and discovered a new way to scare the crap out of people.

At least they are headed in the right direction. A CME ending civilization is about a million times more likely than Anthropogenic Global Warming doing the same.

By the way, if you are interested in solar science you should check out www.spaceweather.com which is run by NASA. It helps put in perspective all the AGW nonsense out there.

I thought a “coronal mass ejection” was when the bouncers closed down the bar in Cancun

“coronal mass ejections”

Do these cause global warming; or are they caused by global warming? Global warming must have something to do with it, no? I just can’t keep these things straight.

CME’s are not solar flares. CME’s are massive ejections of millions of metric kilometers of photon and elctron rich plasma, leaving the sun at twelve million miles an hour and accelerating. They are much more violent and much more dangerous. A giant one, pointed in exactly the right (wrong) direction, could squash our magnetosphere and rip the atmosphere right off the planet.

have a nice day.

It would give us 3 or 4 days to think about what to do.

Of course, nothing is as dangerous as the Empire’s Death Star.

If you’re worried about saving the Earth, maybe you shouldn’t even be on the WWW. It uses precious electricity.

I would tell these people that there is only one way they can save the Earth-Kill Yourself. It’s the only way to really make sure they can reduce their carbon footprint. Put their money where their mouth is. Then at least I would be impressed with their commitment to the cause.

SOHO already does this, and does it better, in conjunction with Stereo-A & Stereo-B.

However, if it occupies the minds of Gaea freaks, keeping them from causing real trouble for a little while each day, then I guess it can't hurt.

This will only work if we can use the WWW to get rid of all of the leftists.

One can’t. OTOH, this kind of data, via NASA and private providers, is routinely used to protect sensitive equipment and satellites that would otherwise suffer (worse) damage.

Some satellites can ‘go turtle’, which effectively shuts them down, but protects sensors, etc. Some earth based equipment can also be put into a protected mode to minimize damage.

OTOH, if a “super storm” were to be headed our way, then we would have enough warning to kiss our fannies good-bye; and maybe even to get in that odd raping, looting, pillaging, or revenge murder that’s been simmering on the back burner.

Some say 'human sacrifice', others say 'carbon-credits'.
