Newser) – Moderate Mark Kirk has won Illinois’ Republican Senate primary, blowing away two conservative opponents backed by tea-party contingents. The congressman has 56% of the vote with more than 82% of precincts reporting—giving him a 37% lead over Patrick Hughes. Analysts predicted that a clear Kirk victory would take much of the steam out of the tea-party movement.

On the Democratic side, the Chicago Tribune reports, state treasurer Alexi Giannoulias looks close to clinching the nomination, setting up a fight with Kirk for the Senate seat vacated by President Obama.

What happened? Here is what happened...the true conservative vote was splintered. If the conservatives had got together and put up/or backed ONE we would have won! Obviously, the RNC didn’t mind that we were unfocused and splintered...it means their guy won. The conservatives need to get better organized here.

Also, we splintered in the Gov. race too. And I hardly ever heard any ads or saw any flyers for Hughes.

Kirk made a lot of noise in Illinois and was the leading contender. I think many in IL decided to just get someone who had the lead get the vote and win Zero’s seat in November. I hope this theory works.

Democrat LITE vs real Democrat

Kirk is going down, the conservatives were way too divided.

The lesson here is for liberals to always fund as many conservatives as possible.

BS. No one expects a Tea Party candidate to be able to win in Illinois. The fact that that Rat candidate, G what’s his name (the mob guy), can even be nominated is a good indication of how far the voters in Illinois have their heads up the people azzes.

It should say “analysts hoped...”

Illinois does offer the voter a choice between R and D ballots at the primary.

You can believe that the likes of ACORN had the troops out all day long with the “crib sheets” and transportation to the polls. Do conservatives do these things?

Don’t condemn the entire state of Illinois. Blame Cook County (Chicago), the U of Illinois and pockets of paid-off politicians. We need more tea party influence!

[Whatever the case may be, it would be silly to not vote for Kirk over a Dem in the general - even considering his very moderate record]

His record is not “moderate.” It is liberal/progressive. We don’t need someone like him in this seat for the media to slap on every “news” show.

[That’s the problem...he is a Republican in the RNC’s book.

This is precisely why I withdrew from the republican party last year and am now registered unaffiliated.]

Do you live in an open primary state? Conservatives need to register republican in closed primary states so they can vote for the most conservative candidate.

A concerted conservative effort by one conservative candidate would have changed the entire dynamic of this contest.

I wish. The conservative Hughes didn't get a lot of exposure and IL is a liberal state, not all that different than MA.

If the conservatives remaining in the republican movement don’t see that, and find a fix for it, then they will always be on the outside looking in.

You're right. Part of the answer is where your donations go. I gave up on giving the party any money awhile ago. Now my money goes to Sen DeMint's PAC SenateConservatives.com. In IL. the only reason to vote for Kirk is because he will caucus with the Pubs and vote for their leadership. Also, he might pick up his phone when called. The Rats don't.
