No - THIS is the type of area that conservatives UNITED should RUN a candidate to oppose BOTH the Dem and the Republican in the general election.

Properly chosen, a much more conservative candidate in this area can allow the Dem and Gop to split the liberals and garner sufficient conservatives to take a 38% victory - much as Buckley was able to do in his 1970 NY Senate victory on the conservative ticket.

This is a good example of the place for Tea partiers to concentrate effort and money outside the GOP.

The fact on the ground is that over fifty percent of registered Republicans voted for the candidate with this abortion position.

What does that tell us about the American electorate? It tells me that there is a lot of minds and hearts that have to be changed.

Whenever I say this on FR someone always goes ballistic on me because I am favoring an "incremental approach" and am the next worst thing to a baby killer myself.

I’m in California, so I get it.

Someone else said the strategy should be to move democrats to Rinos in the liberal areas, Rinos (or conservative dems) to conservative candidates.

We need to move the country right, and even electing Rinos over a dem will do that.

“We need to move the country right, and even electing Rinos over a dem will do that.”

What’s the difference between the liberal Mark Kirk and his likely Democrat opponent? Because on the important issues I am not finding one.

I don’t live in Illinois... do you? and if so do YOU have a candidate who can beat the democrat Daley machine who is a social conservative? You all need to realize all states in this country are not equal and a person who could be elected in Texas could never get elected in a liberal state like CA, IL, NY.... as far as I can tell Kirk is a fiscal conservative, he is not a social conservative.

No... what “he” will do is pull just enough votes from Kirk that a real honest to God Mobster will be elected to the senate. Real smart there folks.

AFAIK Mark Kirk is not directly connected to the mob... his opponent is... I’d call that a pretty significant difference.

This is what it helps us do. Basically, if the republicans get the majority back, then we get have the Senate majority and Reid is out.

That’s all it does, but that’s a good thing.

“AFAIK Mark Kirk is not directly connected to the mob”

So other than that, he’s a liberal democrat?

“as far as I can tell Kirk is a fiscal conservative, he is not a social conservative.”

Fiscal conservative? Do you have any idea what Cap & Tax is going to do to us financially?

How about him being anti-second amendment? That is not a social conservative issue, that is a constitutional issue.

Do we now support anti-constitutionalists in the GOP?

Conservative or not (I think not), it is important for us to calm down and make sure the Democrat does NOT win the seat in the general.

There are two democrats running for the office. Either way, the Democrat Party wins.

For those who can’t bring themselves to vote or support otherwise Kirk, but still don’t want to give up on the state that provided Lincoln and Reagan I suggest supporting devoting whatever they can give to Brady for IL Gov. in the fall, presuming his tiny lead holds. He’s certainly more conservative than Kirk, probably about as conservative as one can hope for coming out of present day Illinois. His powerbase is downstate, not Cook county and not from the liberal state GOP establishment. The Democrats had a fairly bitter primary and public opinion of Quinn’s administration is about as poor as can be for a Democrat in the state absent criminal charges. The race is winnable. If Brady wins not only will the state government get a bit better, but the state GOP party would undergo a much needed restructuring. The next US Senate race might not feature a RINO shoved down our throat.

Krik isn’t a conservative. He is a liberal and he isn’t going to get a lot of the conservative vote. The Democrat will win by double digts.
