DOMA is the federal statute that says state X, which prohibits gay marriage, can’t be forced to recognize a gay marriage performed in state Y. As Tapper reminds us, candidate Obama opposed it in 2007. Two years later, Change has come to America. Question: Why does the president hate gay people?

The Obama administration cited Catalano v. Catalano (marriage of uncle to niece, “though valid in Italy under its laws, was not valid in Connecticut because it contravened the public policy of th[at] state”); Wilkins v. Zelichowski (marriage of 16-year-old female held invalid in New Jersey, regardless of validity in Indiana where performed, in light of N.J. policy reflected in statute permitting adult female to secure annulment of her underage marriage), and re Mortenson’s Estate, (marriage of first cousins held invalid in Arizona, though lawfully performed in New Mexico, given Arizona policy reflected in statute declaring such marriages “prohibited and void”).

Consider this another one of those highly nuanced, “pragmatic” reversals that the media — sans Tapper, natch — will helpfully overlook. “But wait,” you say, “isn’t the president duty bound to enforce a federal statute until Congress gets around to repealing it?” Why, er, no. Back in 2000, a little-known law passed in 1968 that purported to override the Warren Court’s “Miranda warnings” was challenged before the Supreme Court. Clinton’s DOJ actually sided with the criminal in arguing that the Miranda case was based on the Fifth Amendment and therefore the statute was unconstitutional; the Supremes had to invite a law professor unconnected to the case to defend the statute at oral arguments. (The DOJ/criminal dynamic duo won.) The charitable view of this is that The One’s thinking strategically, knowing there’d be a backlash against gay marriage if states that prohibit it were suddenly forced to recognize gay unions performed in, say, Iowa. He’s only looking out for the best interests of gays, you see. The uncharitable view is that he’s worried that the backlash would cripple his reelection chances, no matter how much it might please his gay constituents, and therefore he’s better off defending DOMA. You don’t think our Barry would be that cynical, do you?

The fact that your ancestry carries guilt and cultural references to the term “half-breed” isn’t my problem. To me, it’s nothing more than a technically accurate, though very primitive term that Obama himself chose to draw attention to with his “doesn’t look like those other Presidents on those dollar bills” comment. How soon many forget around here.

If DOMA falls in the Supreme Court it’s all over. Doesn’t matter if your state forbids same-sex marriage, the “Full Faith and Credit Clause” circumvents it (which is what DOMA short circuits and prevents).
This is why gay/lesbian groups are going to state-friendly legislations and courts....to essentially build a “concensus” so the Surpreme court will take up the matter (DOMA) and officially rule on it.

This DoMA defense is a sop to the A-A church-goin' (the same ones that passed Prop 8 in Kalifornia); but it's also a wedge issue that we can use to get the sheeple to sit on their hands next time.

All right smart white man, what does half-breed mean?
The term “half-breed” in America is an archaic term that dates back to the 1750’s, when American Indian and European bloodlines mixed, the offspring were known as “half-breeds”.
This, in fact, applies to ME. in the true American cultural historical sense, I AM A HALF-BREED, and in my upbringing and my parent’s country of origin, this term is NOT OFFENSIVE.
Now, in the technical sense, this would apply to animals of somewhat similar species that normally don’t breed.
This is more closely what I was referring to, though maybe not EXACTLY.
The remaining definitions are modern day corruptions of the 1750’s use of the term that I don’t acknowledge. If this term was used in a classic western, that’s where I recognize it from.
I in fact love the historical reference to the term, as it brings to light that America dealt with race issues prior to the Revolutionary War.
As for Obama, I’m highlighting the fact that HE HAS NO RACE AT ALL. HE CAN’T CLAIM TO BE EITHER ONE, and anyone that tries to claim that he is “African American” is very mistaken.
I apologize to my fellow half-breeds for insulting you by categoring Obama in with the rest of us.
As for the rest of you, maybe you should start watching some old westerns and SEE HOW AMERICA WAS REALLY FORMED!
