Eddie Bauer Holdings may seek bankruptcy protection as soon as this week, according to five people with knowledge of the discussions.
The speculation halved the Bellevue company's stock price, which fell 24 cents to close at 24 cents Tuesday.
Hilco Consumer Capital has expressed interest in bidding on the outdoor-clothing chain's assets, said the people, who declined to be identified because the talks aren't public.

Wa news, economy
Wondering too how long LLBean can continue on with their products of lesser quality and lesser availability.
Ping!
Dunno. But I’m seriously thinking of hitting GI Joe’s and seeing what they got.
EB sux, the Spiegels of plaid.
They used to be a good outdoors store... even sold firearms.
The various US clothing makers thought they could save money by outsourcing their clothing manufacture to foreign factories. They didn't take into account that once the foreign makers learned how to make clothing to American tastes, they would sell direct to Walmart, Old Navy, etc.
I could see this coming for years...when they quit being REI, LL Bean like.
down here Bass Pro Shop rocks....I have friends from LA....when they first get here their kids scream for Bass Pro
no offense to Mid Westerners and their Cabelas
“...Bass Pro Shop rocks...”
No complaints from this Yankee. I love ALL sports shops. :)
REI for the backpacking and kayaking stuff.
Bass Pro for 'heavy camping', hunting, and dog training.
Eddie Bauer is just Abercrombie & Fitch Light.
I can remember when A&F was a real outdoor store. They hosted professional hunter Peter Capstick and it was a great evening.
Amen!! Those folks and Lands' End.
I still wear my Superior Polar Parka from 1969, and I still have one very old down sleeping bag with a deerskin liner.
If you look at the catalog now, it's all crap. No surprise they're going out of business.
Lived in a rural area for years and did all our shopping for the entire family at LLBean.
The quality is just not there anymore. Last couple of years I haven’t found a thing worth buying....at any price.
There has been a Bass Pro outside of LA for a few years now and I love it. I just bought some gear for a hike up Half Dome in Yosemite last week. Their clothing, from Redhead to Tommy Bahama is cool to.
Eddie Bauer reminds me of what happened to Banana Republic years ago. They were a great outdoor store but were bought by the Gap and turned into a Yuppie store.
I can remember when A&F was a real outdoor store. They hosted professional hunter Peter Capstick and it was a great evening.
Yep, gotta agree... I was delighted when A&F opened a location near me in the early '80s, but within two years it had morphed into a teeny-bopper clothing store. Meh.
What's left... Orvis?
I will say that some of their men's shoes (the boat shoes in particular) are still pretty good. Far better than even the high-end shoes that Sperry sells these days (the Chinese are incapable of making a quality shoe, period).
we actually have a Gander Mountain coming to Nashville I think....and I order a lot of hunting stuff from Cabelas
BSP filled in that gap down south
I like all of them
I can remember when I loved going to Eddie Bauer at the Boston Back bay store....such cool stuff
darn shame
I remember when Abercrombie sold clothes that fit real men over size 32 waist..my dad loved the place in the 80s
I’m 6’5” and 230
nothing they have fits me...but I do have a lot of their old kahkis and heavy sweaters
they used to sponsor safaris too with real guns and animal murdering too...they have a helluva pedigreed history
now they just sell to kids and push sex to do it...I will confess their sales girls are often lovely even if half my age..lol
I still have a down camo cap for duck hunting sold by EB in the '70s.
When they stopped selling parkas with the hoods lined with animal fur that was the PC decision that ended our relationship.
