Swine flu forces shutdown of Richardson school

RICHARDSON — Richardson Independent School District officials said Monday that Canyon Creek Elementary School will be closed for the rest of the week after one student tested positive for the swine flu virus.

To answer your question, the two schools in TX (high school between Austin and San Antonio and this elem near Dallas) are being closed for a week. They’ll probably just make that week up the first week of June. Your son should be fine. If nothing else, the AF could give him a GED test since he’s cleared for everything else.
Anyone else notice the H1N1 google map and that cases tend to run along major highways?

Well the mortality rate in Mexico is about 6%.
The Spanish Flu of 1918 (the worst on record), to contrast, killed 1%.

How do you know the mortality rate in Mexico is 6%? In order to know that, you’d first have to know how many total cases there are in Mexico and I’ll bet you anything you want to bet that that number is orders of magnitude higher than the 2000 or so being reported.
If there were only 2000 or so cases in Mexico then how in the hell do all of those vistors to Mexico from other parts of the world seem to be bringing it back home from there? It would be a mathmatical impossibility that only 2000 infected Mexicans would so easily infect many visitors to Mexico without large numbers of Mexicans living there being infected.
If the truth about the total number of infections were to be reported, then the mortality rate would be revealed to be extremely low (like normal human influenza) and the media/government would no longer have a story.
The U.S. should close its border with Mexico. This would be good practice for what will be necessary right after the next 9/11, which is inevitable with Obama in office.
Some say it’s impossible to close the border. Oh yeah?

Just keep some facts in mind. While indeed there may be ‘markers’ of different strains — pig, human, avian ... this is still an H1N1 variant. Thus it is closely related to Type A influenza. Type A influenza(s) have had human-to-human vectors (transmission) for generations and generations. It is not news if an H1N1 virus spreads ... UNLESS it is highly virulent, with high morality rates, and doesn’t respond to existing therapeutics.
IT would be BIG news if the so-called H5N1 ‘avian-flu’ was being transmitted human to human like this one is.
Not to minimize the threat, cuz this one is causing SARDS (severe acute respiratory distress syndrome) and/or pneumonia (fluid in the lungs). Just keep in mind that right now the guidance to professionals is no different than for a regular winter-time flu bug — tell your patients to stay home, stay hydrated, stay clean, and don’t spread it. The professional guidance is NOT to check in to a hospital. The guidance is to self-quarantine, which would be a nice way of saying call in sick.
The data about mortality are not clear yet, but ... one might logically infer that this virus is more potent than last winter’s flu bug that sorta kinda made the rounds.
Personally, I’d recommend having the stuff at home you need to keep care of the entire family if all fall ill. No need to declare “Alas Babylon.”
Just so ya know, the CDC is telling docs that this swine influenza A (H1N1) virus is susceptible to the prescription antiviral drugs oseltamivir and zanamivir.

remember that mosquito-born fluy that had them spraying neighborhoods and such? It was the big deal for a while, hardly gets mentioned lately. I am sure it’ll be next for a big come back in the media.
The solution to save America from this crisis is to let Texas become its own country!
Mexico is a 3rd world country and their health system is scared of this crisis. They aren’t doing the proper things so far, especially if the reports cited by Rush were correct.

Because we don’t know whether the US strain is less virulent or not. It may be that we just haven’t seen enough cases yet to see any mortality, or because those who have been infected here, because they have generally been youngsters or teenagers, are not part of the most vulnerable groups. It may also be that this strain has yet to mutate, as the Spanish flu did, and emerge even more deadly than before. It could also easily become resistant to the antivirals being used. Because this flu does not follow the mortality pattern of common flu, but more closely looks like Spanish flu patterns, people are nervous. I don’t blame them. There is no reason to panic, but there is much to be cautious about.
You made some good points earlier in your post but then shot it all to hell in your closing statement when you somehow claim to know the underlying statistics (no one does). :-).
I have a daughter at Univ. of North Texas. She’ll be done on May 15th. Can’t wait until she’s back home here in Minnesota. How far is Richardson from Denton?
