STRASBOURG, France - Black-clad protesters attacked police and set a customs station ablaze Saturday on a bridge linking France and Germany that served hours earlier as the backdrop for a show of unity by NATO leaders.

AP photographers saw other protesters storm a nearby Ibis hotel, setting fires and pilfering alcohol from its bar.

Stacks of old tires were also set ablaze, unleashing thick plumes of black smoke that could be seen from across the river. Near the bonfire was a sign welcoming visitors to Strasbourg.

First lady Michelle Obama and other spouses canceled a visit to a cancer hospital out of concern for security, the French president's office said. Some 1,000 protesters were staked out near the hospital they were to visit.

Some of the protesters say they want an end to war and call NATO a tool of Western imperialism. Others simply appear bent on causing chaos.

Awww... I'm pretty sure we stayed at this Ibis hotel in Strasbourg back in the late 1990s. (It's kind of a Motel-6 equivalent, except I remember getting free breakfasts and free, or discounted dinners there) It was (still is?) part of the Accor chain of hotels.

I disagree with the idea, the terminology of “Protester” frequently used during incidents of this sort. This is important.

I believe that these uniformly clad, black hooded, individuals are mercenaries.

“Protesters” whom are people as say ourselves with self righteous convictions and purpose stage such demonstrations such as civilized “Tea Parties” in which we demand our grievances be recognized by otherwise inattentive elected representation within our Governing elite.

We do not have a tendency to destroy property, molest people, and generally create havoc for the purpose of attention, nor do we need to lower ourselves to match the activities of such scum.

These purposeful uncivil actions are the work of uncivil, and self serving mercenaries paid by a source to address the evil within themselves for the performance of disruptive activities to gain visibility for a manufactured cause that will benefit the entity that is the source of their funding.

We need to positively identify that source, its purpose, and address their intent with whatever means we determine their intent requires. War is war be it psycho, or otherwise.

It’s difficult to outline a positive one-size-fits-all type of remedy for these acts of disruption as the cunning, and the stupid would then push to cancel all civil protests with some illogical logic as we have seen in the past.
