Silly Bill Would Forbid Boeing From Threatening to Leave State
Seattle Times ^ | 26 March 2009

Six Democratic legislators have introduced a bill to stop Boeing from threatening to move out of Washington. That's right: threatening to move. Such is a silly end to a silly story.

The tale begins with a different bill, one that would forbid any company from requiring employees to attend a meeting about labor issues. The bill is organized labor's, which calls it the "Worker Privacy Act." We argued on this page that it violates federal labor law, employers' free-speech rights and simple fairness.

At the time, we were told the bill was snake venom to Boeing, and would be just the thing to scare the company into moving to North Carolina. Boeing officials had not said that to us. Its friends had said it, and to everyone who would listen.

The bill looked like it might pass until two weeks ago, when the story broke that the Washington State Labor Council was caught sending a threatening e-mail about it. Democratic leaders said immediately the bill was dead, and that they were sending the radioactive e-mail to the Washington State Patrol.

Why had they called the cops? The supposed reason was a statement that if politicians didn't pass the bill they would get "not another dime from labor." But it wasn't illegal to say that. A "threat" not to donate money is fully within labor's rights, or anyone's.

That was because the new CEO (who later resigned because he was screwing the help) at the time lived in Chicago and his wife didn’t want to move to Seattle. One can hardly imagine IL being any better for business than WA, Boeing used the excuse that one of its major customers was located in Chicago. That was just a BS excuse.

Didn’t Oakland try this with the Raiders?

Really!?

It is amazing how corporate headquarters move to satisfy the Whims of the CEO.

I remember when Firestone move Corporate HQ to Chicago for the same reason you explained. When Bridgestone bought Firestone and got rid of the CEO they moved right back to Akron.

How many millions does this stuff cost?

Boeing moved its headquarters to...CHICAGO?? Now there’s a garden spot of freedom! Not permitted to move out of Washington? Only leftists are arrogant enough to think that way. “You’re not allowed to leave the state because it would be bad for us politically!!!” Incredible.

Don’t threaten - just do. We’ve got a pretty good workforce here in the south, and we generally aren’t big on unions either. C’mon down, Boing!

Have you see the buildings Boeing has constructed to build their planes. The assembly building in Everett, Washington is the largest building, by volume, in the world. There is also the skilled work force required and available locally. In short, relocating the manufacturing facilities is not feasible.

Procrastinator’s Motto: Never put off to tomorrow what you can put off till next week.

I was going to procrastinate today, but decided to do that later.

What do you call a person who is opposed to procrastination? An anticrastinator?

North Carolina would be a great place for them to move. A few decades behind the socialist trends of Illinois and Washington (their existing homestates).

Boeing could also just move to Las Vegas. We have all the airspace necessary and their employees could move with them and get a tax break too! And our unions are mostly weak little weenie types or they would have been able to stop the Right-To-Work laws.

feasible?

If Boeing is threatening to leave after all the special deals they squeezed out of the crud in Olympia - at the expense of all the other businesses, they are probably thinking survival.

Maybe it'd be the best thing for the state - as long as huge voting blocks like goverment, Port of Seattle & Boeing workers are kept fat dumb and happy, they aren't going to give a rat's patootie about small businesses.

If Boeing announced that they aren't about to stick around for this Cap & Trade Gorebull Scamming along with the rest of the BS that flows out of Olympia with ever increasing velocity, maybe we'll finally get rid of the dopes and get some change around here.

Get a whole new sensible crew in, and we could steal plenty of businesses from CA & OR, not to mention cooperating with AK on energy instead of blocking it.

Instead of dropping essential elements like CO2 to 1/2 1990's level, cut government by that, along with most of the regulations the've written since then.

Reduce the amount of K-12 indoctrination centers, drop the racist qoutas in colleges, stick to clsses that will make them an asset in the business/industrial world, use the savings to promote home and private schools, and our graduates will be much better able to compete for productive, lasting careers.....without threatening anyone.
