Pay attention, it’s back. And don’t try to call it anything but amnesty, please.

Heh... and what do you think we'll be able to do about anything? Hate to break it to you, but the liberals run things now. It's over. We lost.

Now, what about Johnny Sutton? Is he going to go out with this administration so he can’t do any more harm? Or, does it affect him? I want HIM gone!!!

Ramos and Compean are each serving sentences of more than 10 years for shooting an unarmed illegal immigrant as he was fleeing an abandoned marijuana load in 2005, then trying to cover it up.

This trying to cover it up is a joke. During the trial it was pointed out that the illegal, while running away, turned around and the agents thought they saw a gun. Now what in the hell is going on. If I was facing a criminal in the act of a crime and after asking to halt, the criminal turned around in a threatening manner, I would have blown his head off. The problem was, all border agents were not allowed to protect themselves at the time, and they did the next best thing knowing that their lives would be over if they didn't. Hard choices, but the rotten way we treat those to protect us are shit on.

Did Bush pardon the border agents or did he just commute their sentences? A sentence commutation does not mean all that much in that the two will still have the conviction blocking them from many federal, state, and private sector jobs simply for doing what “we, the people” hired them to do.

Weren’t there still appeals going on that would result in a total vindication? I thought some argument was put forward that they would be better off with a commutation, that a pardon could clear their record but not give real vindication that an winning an appeal would.

If I were either of them, I’d just want it over with! Few of us can even begin to imagine the nightmare these men and their families have gone through.

"They may have trouble finding work with a felony conviction on their records."

I doubt it, I doubt it very much. With ALL they went through, I don't think they'd have ANY problem finding jobs, as they shouldn't. They are SO many people on their side - I wish them the best in everything and God Bless them!! They've done their hell on earth.

Yeah, they’re still convicted felons, but they’re getting out of jail.

"NOW GIVE THEM THEIR DAMN JOBS BACK!!!!"

Now, why the hell would they want their old jobs back??? They'd have to be crazy to want to go back there!

Yeah. You’re probably right. They would be better off spending their time taking their story to the 48% of us who are still Americans. Talk radio, books, etc. They need to tell their story.

It means they’re out of jail but that they still have criminal records. Cannot work in law enforcement, cannot be reinstated to the jobs that were taken from them, cannot get a CFL, etc.

I’m surprised he didn’t wait until tomorrow morning.

Lets quit beating around the figgin bush. These guys were popped on minor beefs, administrative stuff. The 10 years came from "Project Exile". NRA endorsed stuff to move things to federal court that were previously local matters. DOOM on that pandering to Brady thugs!

True - the fleeing drug smuggler was not a threat to them and shooting him was not within the allowed forms of engagement for that particular set of circumstances - which is precisely why they chose to not correctly document the event. The first act may well have been dismissed as error, but the second act is a crime, and it is just that they remain convicted.

All of that being said, I wouldn't have objected to a jury pardon in their case, given only what I know about it.

Had a jury not convicted them, yes of course I’d have had no problem with that.

Where I part with some conservative brethren is that from what I’ve seen these guys did probably push too far. I’ll stand behind cops and federal officers that simply make mistakes. But when they don’t own up to a mistake and cover it up... I also don’t blame a jury for looking down on that. These guys were a party to their fate.

But that said, I think the sentence was too much for the crime. I’m glad that Bush commuted the sentence. I think it was the right answer.

IMHO

I'm pretty much with you on that. It was essentially a "bad" police shoot, which can be a mistake and they certainly had a chance to make their case on that, but chose instead to try to cover it up. From what I understand the length of the sentences they received was due to a firearms enhancement.

The end result probably exceeded their worst fear in terms of legal jeopardy, but of all people they should know the law and certainly shouldn't be above it. In a system where transgressions such as this are so often brushed aside, it's good to see accountability.

Of course there are plenty who don't see it that way because of the perceived societal quality of the "victim", but it's not the place of police or even society in general to make that judgment.
