Yellowstone Earthquake Update

Nearly 400 earthquakes have rocked Yellowstone National Park since last Friday. The quakes are putting scientists on alert, but they say this type of activity isn't unusual. As long as the quakes continue, the park will keep a very close eye on the region.

Hank Heasler, the Park's Geologist, said "Back in 1985, up to 3 months of earthquakes (occured). (They were) up to magnitudes 4.7. So the past four days have been relatively energetic for the last few years."

Scientists say predicitng earthquakes is still in it's infancy and not reliable. Park officials are not worried that this swarm of quakes could lead to a catastrophic event. However with the lack of accurate forecasting it is possible that these small tremors could be a precursor to a much bigger quake or even a volcanic eruption.

There are still a few weeks for George W. Bush to have another calamity.

While in Yellowstone last fall, I asked a Park Ranger what would happen if there was a major volcanic erruption and she said “We’d be vaporized”. What the hey...

When the Yellowstone caldera blows again you can kiss 1/3 of the lower 48 goodbye ... and look for an earth ELE with it. After 600K years Yellowstone is due for another major eruption and she could blow tomorrow ... or in a thousand years ... according to our greatest seismologists.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I’ve been following this for the past four days. What is happening there is NOT normal. Lots of what appears to be harmonic tremors (magma movement). From what I’ve read, some of the seismologists and vulcanologists are getting very interested in what is happening.

We just got a new Trane furnace with the super-filter; we may survive the ashfall. Food is a different matter.

That’s why some of those scientists have relocated to the East Coast.

The seismograph at Yellowstone Lake has been shaking more or less nonstop for several hours now in minor tremors.

Not with very deep ash.

Yep. From the last eruption, it’s estimated that there is at least a foot of ash as far east as Oklahoma I think I read.

A caldera won’t be a pure local phenomenon.

Yep, I’ve been watching it. I almost hate to mention it, but AboveTopSecret.com has a very interesting thread running. (listed under “fragile earth”). Lots of info and knowledge and some really good links to what is happening in real time. Living relatively close to it, it’s a bit unnerving.

What, so they can stick their fingers in their ears when it starts?
