MUMBAI (Reuters) - Indian accusations of a Pakistani link to the attacks on Mumbai that killed nearly 200 people threaten to damage attempts to improve ties between the rivals.

Indian officials have said most, perhaps all, of the 10 attackers who held Mumbai hostage with frenzied attacks using assault rifles and grenades came from Pakistan, a Muslim nation carved out of Hindu-majority India in 1947.

There were ten separate attacks so this doesn’t sound like a realistic number at all.

It sure doesn’t take many people with guns to kill a LOT of unarmed.

I wish India would undo their gun laws, which seem to be a legacy of English rule that they are suffering with.

Ten was the number given by the one that was captured. However nine or so were captured. 25 was an early estimate, up to 100. Some may have walked out into the night and will never be captured.

We probably won’t know exact numbers for a few days yet.

I think the best revenge India could pull off would be to arrange with NATO to fly an entire division (30,000) of Indian army light infantry into Afghanistan, to help close its porous border with Pakistan.

More than anything else, this would cause unbridled hysteria in Pakistan, at all levels. Just today the Pakistan government announced that if tensions with India increase, it would re-deploy about an army (100,000) of soldiers to the Indian border.

While a division of Indian army on the Afghan border would not, by itself, be enough to menace Pakistan, it would open a possible second hostile front with India, that would make any aggressive Pakistani generals think twice.

And the Pakistani intelligence service, the ISI, who likely trained and armed the Mumbai terrorists, would get seriously punished for bringing down a serious threat on Pakistan’s head.

Of course, the Taliban and al-Qaeda would be sorely oppressed, with the Indians and NATO on one side, and the Pakistani army on the other.

Nothing more likely.

It may never be known. And, there are ‘soft’ targets all over the planet so this could be repeated, seems like, every day.

Hopefully it isn’t coming to a city near you. Wonder where those 40 Somali’s from St Paul vanished to?

I doubt we will ever know. Some probably walked away. How would anyone know?

Surveillance cameras and eyewitness accounts might provide a clue.

Just 10 terrorists? I think we will soon be told there were also spotters in the crowds and maybe off to the side watching realtime media coverage.

Nevertheless, I cannot wonder what it will be like when (!) a similar attack is tried in an area of the US where there would be some CCW holders in the crowd of intended victims. Indeed that is one point to note, for some “martyrdom” mission planners have shown great attention to detail, and if that is true, I will wager such an attack will take place in a jurisdiction that forbids CCW.

I doubt that, because the area of attack was so large, even the police couldn't figure out what was actually happening. The attacker could have just ditched their weapons after the attack, and walked away.

From the area covered, you would have to think that 10 men was not enough, but was all they could find.

You know, the day when 9/11 went down, I told the wife, someday we are going to see a terror loaded mother-ship attack on the USA like what happened in India. Now that the effectiveness was demonstrated, the low cost involved, it will be sooner rather than later. And only alert citizens stand any chance of thwarting it.

From what I hear the city has very few cameras.

They had primary “diversionary” attack targets, where they shot up pedestrians and then ran to their primary targets in buildings, to kill more people, take hostages, and try to prolong the mayhem as long as possible.

They moved in buddy pairs, so that one could always be firing while the other was reloading.

This buddy pair tactic explains the casualties spread through their primary targets: it was literally run and gun, hit and run. They didn’t however have enough manpower to create a single long hostage siege. If they did, they’d still be inside and alive.

I’d look for a future attack to expand on this, with multiple small teams/buddy pairs mainly as diversions, while the main team really locked down a hotel, school or hospital like in Beslan Russia.

By the time the security forces figure out which attack site contains the “real” terrorist effort, they will be firmly in charge, with all exits chained adn boobytrapped etc.
