Fusing Politics and Motherhood in New Way
New York Times ^ | September 7, 2008 | JODI KANTOR, KATE ZERNIKE and CATRIN EINHORN

Sarah Palin’s baby shower included a surprise guest: her own baby. He had arrived in the world a month early, so on a sunny May day, Ms. Palin, the governor of Alaska, rocked her newborn as her closest friends, sisters, even her obstetrician presented her with a potluck meal, presents and blue-and-white cake.

Most had learned that Ms. Palin was pregnant only a few weeks before. Struggling to accept that her child would be born with Down syndrome and fearful of public criticism of a governor’s pregnancy, Ms. Palin had concealed the news that she was expecting even from her parents and children until her third trimester.

But as the governor introduced her son that day, according to a friend, Kristan Cole, she said she had come to regard him as a blessing from God. “Who of us in this room has the perfect child?” said Ms. Palin, who declined to be interviewed for this article.

Since that day, Trig Paxson Van Palin, still only 143 days old, has had an unexpected effect on his mother’s political fortunes. Before her son was born, Ms. Palin went to extraordinary lengths to ensure that his arrival would not compromise her work. She hid the pregnancy. She traveled to Texas a month before her due date to give an important speech, delivering it even though her amniotic fluid was leaking. Three days after giving birth, she returned to work.

basically the NY Slimes is saying that Sarah “covered up” her baby...literally and figuratively. It’s subtle slam...about how she’s “using” her baby, and putting politics first.

Let them keep it up... When Trig is 12 years old, Sarah will be giving her last State of the Union Speech, while BHO will be back to “community organizing”

If that’s the article everyone was talking about, including Drudge,...not bad, not bad at all. :)

But why? She has a child that most likely her and her husband will outlive. That fact is pain enough. These miserable creatures at the Times should spend all this energy on investigating Obama.

I’m stunned! This is pretty straight-forward reporting.

Is that the case? I didn’t know that the lifespans were truncated.

yes.

But I guess it proves that Trig was her baby and that she can keep her children close to her, even while working.

the consummate multi-tasker.

That was my reaction. This may not be their only article though. They may have a sidebar hit piece that they haven't released yet.

The NY Slimes just hoisted the white flag. The massive media attack campaign against Sarah Palin has failed... at least, for now.

Yes, there’s the little bit from Willow asking why she hadn’t told them of Trig’s condition, and maybe Sarah could be seen as not fully focused on the governorship—though wasn’t the best thing about JFK his having John-John playing under his desk in the Oval Office?

But generally it is very sweet, with Piper and her puppy, and Todd being what until last week was the liberal woman’s dream husband. I notice three female reporters share the byline and wonder if the had a Greta-like reaction to all the piling on.

I also noticed that her husband was with her in Texas so she wasn’t alone. First time I saw that.

I wonder how truncated they are? I have two cousins that have Down’s and they’re both seemingly very healthy. One has even graduated college.

So is this the so-called hit piece DU and Kos were anticipating?

It was not negative at all.

Actually, they seem to clear up the rumor of her flying around when in labor.

But I am interested in how the media (prior to this article) seemed to know that she was leaking fluid...seems to me to be some kind of other leak...like the kind of leak that should land someone in the slammer for 10 years.

I actually thought it was a very good piece. I guess, if people are looking for something to dislike, they can find it, but I enjoyed the article very much.

I didn’t think even the NYT would be stupid enough to do a hit piece on someone’s baby.

As if I didn’t already incredibly admire this woman, even more so now. She brings her kids with her everywhere and is actually able to concentrate/multitask a press conference with the kids around.

And, she breast feeds.

What an amazing example of womanhood. One day back to work with Piper and 3 days back to work with Trig. Wow. I also admire her determination to get back into her state of Alaska to give birth. I’m sure she thought it would be awful for the governor to give birth in Texas.

One more reason to vote her into office:

She assured them she would not take much time off: she had returned to work the day after giving birth to Piper. “To any critics who say a woman can’t think and work and carry a baby at the same time,” she said, “I’d just like to escort that Neanderthal back to the cave.”
