The chattering classes read the NYT. Even though probably half of the people who get the NYT will actually read the article, it will be television fodder for weeks.
I guess they want to go out in a blaze of glory before Proctor & Gamble buys them and starts printing the same thing, only with a softer material and perforations for easy use.

If they do this it will backfire big time; I too am cautious of the Drudge story, we will have to wait and see.
If they do it, expect all NYTimes reporters on the campaign trail with McCain/Palin to be kicked off the bus/plane.
Maybe they are going to “expose” the fact that she didn’t abort a downsyn child. That is actually a totally immoral and unforgivable act to the left. Add to that the act of permitting her daughter to not abort the premarital child and Sarah Palin is an utterly unspeakable person unit.

The weird turn of phase together with the insanity this topic makes me think it's just Drudge putting up a nonsense "developing" story up to generate hits

Funny you mention this. My expecting wife and I just completed a class on birthing and we learned that it can be quite a bit of time between water breaking and actual delivery. If the doctor is fine with it, then there is no big deal at all.
