WASHINGTON — The conservative group running advertisements that highlight Senator Barack Obama’s association with the 1960s radical William Ayers is being financed by a Texas billionaire who has raised money for Senator John McCain and who also helped finance the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth campaign against Senator John Kerry in 2004.
The billionaire, Harold Simmons, donated nearly $2.9 million on Aug. 12 to the American Issues Project, the group running the advertisements, papers it has filed with the Federal Election Commission show.
In 2004, Mr. Simmons donated $2 million to the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, whose advertisements against Mr. Kerry included one that, with allegations since discredited, impugned his military service as a Swift boat captain during the Vietnam War

I read your piece in today's Times on the funding habits of one Harold Simmons. After completing the article it left me with numerous question about its' validity and the accusations you make.
You initially claimed, "In 2004, Mr. Simmons donated $2 million to the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, whose advertisements against Mr. Kerry included one that, with allegations since discredited, impugned his military service as a Swift boat captain during the Vietnam War."
Please point out one credible source which has discredited any of the claims made by the SBV, men who served with John Kerry in Vietnam.
Second; you note, "Mr. Obama has called Mr. Ayers “somebody who engaged in detestable acts 40 years ago, when I was 8 years old.”
And while that may be true do you deny any of the quotes in the ad attributed to Obama in reference to William Ayers??? Or is this another case of the NY Times telling just one side of the story??
Speaking of which- at what point in time will you, or your paper, being doing an expose' on 527 groups funded by George Soros??? Or major benefactors to groups such as ACORN??

My experience with writing to the three (I think) generations of NY Times public editors has been spotty. You always get the auto-reply, but early on they would write back individually. In one instance back then, an editor called to speak to me about the issues I raised.
Lately, though, they answer less often.

It’s the patriots like Harold Simmons who keep this country alive. I doubt his name will be in any general history texts. Yet where would we be without him?

The only allegation that was discredited is the one where Kerry was going to sign the release so we could see his records. . .

Since there is no substance to Obama, the McCain camp needs only to pull back the ‘vagueness veil’ and reveal some of Obama’s actual values—like protecting the abortion-by-neglect evil—and the projections voters have placed on the Obamessiah will no longer stick and they will fall out of love witht he bubblehead Axelrod has foisted upon us. Of course, it exposes the bankruptcy at the heart of the democrat party too, but so far the Republican congressional re-election folks have failed to capitalize, big time.

The fact that he was ordered to be over the fence by the CIC prior to the CIC being the CIC just shows how brave he really, really was.
