Phelps ties Spitz's with seventh gold By Steven Nelson Posted Friday, August 15, 2008 6:38 PM ET BEIJING -- Move over Mark Spitz.
Michael Phelps won his seventh gold medal of the Beijing Olympics on Saturday, edging Milorad Cavic by .01 of second in the 100m butterfly.
Spitz won his seven gold medals at the 1972 Munich Games. Phelps will try to beat the record in the 4x100m medley relay Sunday.
"I've always marveled at the fact that in the last four years (since Phelps won six golds in Athens), he has had to live with a lot more expectations and anxiety that I had to deal with," Spitz said.
"I was under the radar circle. Only in swimdom circles did people understand what I was trying to do. And only after four days of an eight-day competition did people from other venues start to understand what was happening at the swim venue in Germany."
While the pre-meet, potential upset talk in the 100m fly centered around world-record holder Ian Crocker, Cailfornia-trained Cavic, who competes for Serbia, surpassed Phelps in the heats as the second-fastest man to swim the event. He nearly spoiled Phelps' chase at history.

The race for the eighth gold medal is not until tonight (Saturday) around 9 p.m. or so, and will be shown live in EST and CST time zones. The U.S. team has already qualified for the final. There was some discussion last night (Friday) about the disqualification during the 2007 World Championships when Ian Crocker started too soon on a relay touch. Perhaps that’s what you heard being discussed?
It was late and hubby thought he heard that. That is why I was on the net looking to see if it was true.

They were kidding you! Phelps did the #1 no no in swimming, he went into the water less than an hour after eating and ignored all the warnings him mom gave him when he was little......

I don’t think it is “righteousness” at all, but common sense. When you open up your browser, isn’t news staring you in the face? I do think it is stupid that they have you on delay. Real stupid. But it isn’t stupid to point out that if you get on the internet, the headlines themselves are going to tell the story you may not want to hear yet.
That's absolutely ridiculous, IMHO. The way the live schedule has been running in EDT, it's perfect for PDT viewing. From what I've seen, most of the "good stuff" starts at 10pm EDT, (7pm PDT).
I really thought (assumed) NBC was running their live coverage throughout all US time zones at the same time. I guess most people thought the same, which is why there have been so many spoiler headlines on FR... (I didn't post 'em!)
Our local NBC anchors also have been going live around 1 am as well, doing the 11pm news whenever the Olympic coverage ends. I think one night it was even around 1:30am or so... LOL.

Look, defensive much? There’s no need to be so nasty in your condemnation of people who are voicing an opinion about results-spoiling HEADLINES. No one called you stupid. I wasn’t spoiled. I wasn’t on the Internet at the time of the race. What I’m amazed to see is the condemnation.
Yeah it really doesn’t make any sense (NBC’s decision). Nor does this bizarre defensive posture. People are saying ‘hey, look, can we at least try to keep the spoilers to a minimum here’ and getting raked for it.
‘I know there’s a war on, and the economic news changes, but stay off the Internet because I can’t police myself to avoid blaring every Olympic result, and nor should I have to. It’s YOUR fault!’

He’s not in Beijing this time but he was in Athens. He’s somewhat estranged from the family, from what I read. He’s watching and he’s proud, and he avoids media questions because he wants the focus to stay on his son.
Please reread my post. I didn’t call the posters stupid. I think the situation that you all are on a delay is stupid.
No, I understood you. “But it isn’t stupid to point out” is what I referring to. Not sure about other people, but I’m not saying it’s stupid to point out that spoilage is possible, so there’s no need to be on the defense about that. I just disagree with the projection-style blame about people who are trying to point out something you might not have known: that we’re unable to see the TV coverage in real time. So try to keep it mind. That is all.
You already addressed this and I wasn’t looking to argue with you. I was immediately taken aback by other posters’ attitudes.
Understand. Don’t want to argue about it either. NBC’s choice doesn’t make sense. It’s not like if people really wanted to see it that they wouldn’t be giving NBC ratings at 7 PM. If swimming were on a 2 in the afternoon, maybe, but even then play it live and then replay the best races at night if you are worried about ratings.

Yea, but I’ve been watching videos on the NBC Olympic site all week, they are just experiencing tech issues. Probably from too much traffic. The You Tube 2007 Olympic videos posted by random people are being pulled for Copyright violations.
Not so hard to understand.
NBC paid a ton for coverage, and they are not going to allow random people to post videos of events online.
All You Tube video links DO NOT expire within a few minutes.

The 2008 Olympic Videos are being pulled due to the fact NBC who paid boodles for coverage is not allowing random people to post videos of the events.
Some videos are still around, I guess because they haven’t been found by YT yet. After all tens of millions of people post and watch videos on YT. Some are bound to slip by.
