Yeah, but Mark Spitz did it with no swim cap, hi-tech suit, and a big hairy stash! But was the 70's, man. No drug testing,...
...and steriods weren't even on the radar screen.

You might be one of the few taking up for Collinsworths question about not being cool. Everyone else thought it was a terrible question, and I agree. Why even bring up the idea of making patriotism possibly seem uncool? Totally uncalled for, in my opinion. For what it's worth...

There is a “pad” the width of the lane and about 3 feet deep which is the sensor. any touch on that pad in any location will stop the clock for that lane. They don’t activate the pad until the swimmer in that lane is on their last lap. That pad is also tied into a sensor on the starting platform so that an early relay start can be detected. If you look closely at the starting area you can see the signal wires going to each pad in each lane.

The bronze medal winner is definitely NOT guilty. Heh.
Nice come back. Myself, with some shame, regards the contents of the speedos very closely before determining my verdict.

Oh quit apologizing to a bunch of sniveling whiners. You’ve made clear how it came down.
This IS a breaking news site and anybody with a few brain cells between their ears should know to avoid it if knowing results of ANYTHING in advance is anathema to them.
They’re like children. It might not bother them as much as their histrionics and claim to indignation give them delight.

This IS a breaking news site and anybody with a few brain cells between their ears should know to avoid it if knowing results of ANYTHING in advance is anathema to them. Exactly.
I went on Yahoo yesterday morning to check my e-mail and the results of the individual womens' gymnastics competition were right there in my face.
The tape delay of same came on TV here at lunchtime and I watched, finding it every bit as exciting as it would have been had I not known the results.
I'll catch this Phelps win a little later this evening and I'm sure it'll still be a thrill to watch.
If I wanted to avoid learning these things ahead of time, I'd avoid the internet until after watching the event. Sheesh.

This guy is so innocent that we must destroy the video of him committing the crime and the presence of his DNA simply had to be planted.

In our local swim meets, it is any part of the wall. During big events we have 3 judges using stop watches for every swimmer. There is usually a difference of up to .2 seconds. The three times are averaged out. It's just human error- some people are slow to start the timers when the gun goes off and some prematurely, or belatedly, stop the watch waiting for the swimmer to touch. It's really tough to tell in lake meeets where the water is murky. The kids usually touch way underwater and it's just a judgment call. My little guy swam a beautiful race the other day and had everybody by a full body length but touched the part where the lane marker hits the wall. It took him a second or two to realize he hadn't touched turning a 1st place finish into 5th. I was timing the next lane over and saw the dilemna-it took everything I had not to scream "Touch the wall"-but that would have been unfair.
In the Olymics there is a little black square called the pad. I am 99% certain that's what they have to touch. I looked closely last night and there seeme to be wires running from the pad. That must be tough to hit on the backstroke where even the best become slightly disoriented. On the other three strokes you are face down and simply follow the central lane marker underneath.

Collingsworth was trying to make himself look "cool" although he's a little long in the tooth to successfully pull it off.
That being said, Kobe's patriotic, from-the-heart answers to stupidass questions rather blew me away. Nice job, Kobe.

NBC isn't running the Olympics in real time on the west coast? No. And it sucks. They could easily run primetime (what they're broadcating live in eastern) live here.. it would just start at 5 instead of 8. It would end at 10 p.m., and they'd have an hour to kill before the news. As it is now, poor KNBC anchors go live at 1 a.m. (which secretly amuses me no end).
I can't believe someone on this thread actually righteously told us PDT people to "stay off the Internet" if we don't want headlines to spoil Olympic race results. That boggles my mind.
