News Analysis From Israel: Russia Invades South Ossetia in War with Gruzia

On Friday, just before the Sabbath, I got an email from Rabbi Rahamim (Richard) Pauli detailing news he had just picked up from Debkafiles.

He pointed out that the 8th of August was the 7th of Av, the day that Babylonian forces broke through the Temple walls in their final attack on the Temple in Jerusalem (its destruction took place on the 9th of Av), and like many looking towards the Jewish calendar for hints of Redemption, he asked, "Is this the beginning of the War of Gog and Magog [the final war that is supposed to precede the coming of the messiah]?"

Let's leave aside the Biblical implications and what they may portend for the future for the moment, and just look at the straight news story out of Debkafiles Friday. The story as of Friday read as follows:

Georgian tanks and infantry, aided by Israeli military advisers, captured the capital of breakaway South Ossetia, Tskhinvali, early Friday, Aug. 8, bringing the Georgian-Russian conflict over the province to a military climax. Russian prime minister Vladimir Putin threatened a “military response"... Reinforcements were rushed to the Russian “peacekeeping force” present in the region to support the separatists. Georgian tanks entered the capital after heavy overnight heavy aerial strikes, in which dozens of people were killed. By Sunday morning, the picture at Dekafiles had changed completely, with the Bush administration warning that Russia had to pull out its soldiers from Gruzia (the native name for Georgia). In these later stories, and in other stories coming out of the war zone, Israel was no longer mentioned.

As the media concentrate on a possible Russian/American standoff over Gruzia (Georgia), Israel will drop from their stories. After all, what importance can we have when two major nuclear powers face off? But we will not drop out of the minds of the Russian invaders of Gruzia. That is not how Russians think, and it is not how they work. They will want vengeance on all who have sullied them, and that includes us in Israel. Gruzian Jewish immigrants have demonstrated outside the Russian Embassy in Tel Aviv waving the crosses on the Gruzian flag in their faces. The Russians do not forget such insults. They are a sensitive lot – brutes with very thin skins. And let's return to the Debkafile 8th August headline: "Israel backs Georgia in Caspian Oil Pipeline Battle with Russia." So, this is not just over some little province in northern Gruzia – nobody cares about Ossetia, either north or south. This is about oil and resources. This explains, in large measure, the sudden Bush response. Prime Minister Putin, the real power in Russia, is peeing on the shoes of the American oil companies. And Israel has chosen to back Gruzia and the American oil companies.

Another rebel province of Gruzia, Abkhazia, which is on the Russian border further from the Gruzian capital of T'bilsi and harder for the central government to control, has launched rocket strikes against Gruzia. This has the all the paw prints of the Russian bear. It is very likely that Gruzia will not be able to withstand a Russian attack, and has already pulled its troops out of the South Ossetian capital captured Friday. It is clear that Gruzia will need help from the outside to survive as a sovereign state that is not a dependent of Russia. The road from South Ossetia leads straight to the Gruzian capital. That sums it up for the straight news out of the region.

The analysis of all this is not as straight or as clear. So far, others are already barking up the wrong tree in looking at this situation. This is not just an issue for America or Gruzia or Russia. We are involved as well; and that will have repercussions.

Now let's return to Rabbi Pauli's question: "Is this the beginning of the War of Gog and Magog?"

According to our sages, the War of Gog and Magog will be a war with lots of different countries fighting each other, as well as ganging up on us to try to destroy us. From the above paragraphs, we can see the distinct possibility of an American/Russian standoff. But how can the repercussions affect us over a war in Gruzia? Let's bottom line our own security situation, first.

A. Since the expulsion of Jews from Gaza, it appears that what has been going on is a gradual laying of explosive powder around us, preparing for a major war:

2. HizbAllah was armed in the north and attacked in July 2006, probing to see Israel's weaknesses which were and which remain

3. Iranian has ramped up of its nuclear abilities, including a nuclear facility in Syria (bombed in 2007)

1. Over 100,000 American soldiers in Iraq, which is not too long a tank drive from here

2. European soldiers in south Lebanon under the auspices of the United Nations, siding with HizbAllah and the Lebanese

3. Arming HizbAllah with the ability to shoot down Israeli planes and sink Israeli ships

All these activities constitute laying of powder around us, preparatory for a major war, events which I and others have documented over the past three years, but most especially since the war in 2006. All that is needed is the fuse to light the explosion. That fuse could come from anywhere. One would most likely look for it in some event occurring here, but it could come from anywhere. Could Gruzia be the fuse? Was the attack on South Ossetia the fire at the end of the match?

In an article accessible at my blog site, Ruvy's Roost, I examine how Tish'a b'Av has been a day not only of disaster for the Jewish people, but also how events on that day may also point a finger towards Redemption. I have also pointed out elsewhere how looking at the Jewish calendar yields "coincidence" after "coincidence" in how events occur. The last really important event to occur Tish'a b'Av was on 2 August 1914 – 9th Av 5674 – the beginning of what most people erroneously call "World War I". In my essay on the subject at my blog site, I pointed out that the interesting thing about this conflict was that those who began it, who brought it about in the pendulous summer of that year, did not think about the significance of the date to us Jews. We did not count at all in the calculations of the Christian and Moslem diplomats who weighed the fates of their nations and plunged four empires into a conflict from which they would never emerge.

I would suggest that similarly, we will not appear to be of importance in a conflict that begins in the Caucasus mountains. But eventually, if this is indeed the beginning of the war of Gog and Magog, the conflict will wind up here. Is this the "breaking of the Temple walls" prior to the main event of "burning the Temple" — the world of lies and falsehood? Let's just sit back and see how events break out, shall we?

I didn’t realize Isreal was involved in this!

I mentioned the Gog Magog thing this morning. This makes me think of it even more with the Isreal connection.

I wonder if God will consult with that all knowing B. Hussein Obama as to when all of this should take place: Now or after Barracks is elected world president?

Probably from Russia, since they are the architect of all this (they're the ones who've been arming the Middle East for decades). When Iran gets its nukes, the war begins. What is the war fought for control of?

When Obama comes on the news I turn away or change channels.

The guy is at best pathetic and his views on just about anything I hold near and dear are way out in looney left field.

Putin, Hugo, Kim and other world dictators would run circles around his inane nincompoop ideals of appeasement.

Obama wants to disarm while Russia, China and others are hell bent to get the latest weapons.

Amanutjob wants to drop an atomic bomb on Israel but he would just as soon drop it in downtown New York City if given the opportunity.

I agree with those who say Obama is like “puzzle” the donkey in C.S. Lewis’ “Last Battle” in the Chronicles of Narnia”; but Obama is, unlike Puzzle, aware and complicit with the duping of the masses going on by those others [who are like the ape who used Puzzle, in Lewis’ book], who are behind the scenes in his deceptive, manipulated rise to celebrity status as a so called politician.
