More Than 30 Indian Youths Disappear in New Zealand

More than 30 Indian youths have disappeared in New Zealand, where they were in transit to go to Sydney for World Youth Day, a spokeswoman for the Catholic Church said Monday.
Lyndsay Freear told Radio New Zealand that a party of 220 Indian Catholics who arrived in Auckland a week ago were due to fly to Sydney Tuesday, but 32 of them had disappeared.
All were billeted with church members in Auckland under a so-called Days in the Diocese programme before going to Australia, where Pope Benedict arrived Sunday for events associated with World Youth Day.
Freear said all the Indian pilgrims had been given 30-day visas when they arrived.
Their disappearance was “most extraordinary and most disappointing”, she said.
She said the 32 who had disappeared from their billets did not have their passports with them and added, “We don’t know whether this was planned or spontaneous.”
She said that New Zealand immigration officials had been informed about their disappearance.

“’Complacency’ worries top FBI counterterrorism official”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “WASHINGTON - On July 2, the sun shines brightly outside the J. Edgar Hoover FBI headquarters building in downtown Washington, D.C. But inside, the mood is understandably different.
Settling into a chair in his office, Michael J. Heimbach, the newly appointed assistant director for the FBI’s Counterterrorism Division, wastes no time laying out his problem.
“As we approach almost seven years after Sept. 11, I’m really concerned about the complacency setting in amongst the American people.”
Speaking in a serious and measured tone, and pointing out that there’s no evidence to suggest an imminent attack, Heimbach says, “Let there be no mistake, al-Qaida or other like-minded individuals are still focused on attacking the homeland.””

DHS Marks 5th Annual National Preparedness Month This September
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced today that more than 1,200 national, regional, state and local businesses and organizations have pledged their support and joined the 2008 National Preparedness Month Coalition. Sponsored by the departments Ready Campaign, National Preparedness Month helps to raise awareness and promote action by Americans, businesses, and communities on emergency preparedness.
As we approach our fifth National Preparedness Month, I want to thank the hundreds of coalition members who are making a difference in their communities by helping raise the basic level of preparedness in our country, said Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff. Individual preparedness is the cornerstone of emergency preparedness. Experience shows that if Americans take steps ahead of time, they stand a much better chance of coming through an emergency unharmed and recovering more quickly.
The Ready Campaign and Citizen Corps (www.citizencorps.gov) are specifically encouraging individuals across the nation to take important preparedness steps. These steps include: getting an emergency supply kit, making a family emergency plan, being informed about the different emergencies that may affect them, as well as taking the necessary steps to get trained and become engaged in community preparedness and response efforts.
National Preparedness Month Coalition members have agreed to distribute emergency preparedness information and sponsor activities across the country that will promote emergency preparedness. Membership is open to all public and private sector organizations. Groups and individuals can register to become members by visiting www.ready.gov, and clicking on the National Preparedness Month banner.
Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee Chairman Joseph I. Lieberman and Ranking Member Susan M. Collins, along with House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Bennie G. Thompson and Ranking Member Peter T. King, will serve as honorary Congressional Co-Chairs of National Preparedness Month 2008. Together, they will lead the effort to increase public awareness about the importance of emergency preparedness on Capitol Hill and throughout the country.
For more information on the Ready Campaign and National Preparedness Month, please visit www.ready.gov or www.listo.gov. Information is also available by phone at 1-800-BE-READY or 1-888-SE-LISTO.
February 2008 marked the Ready Campaigns fifth year at the Department of Homeland Security. Launched in 2003 in partnership with The Advertising Council, Ready is designed to educate and empower Americans to prepare for and respond to emergencies, including natural disasters and potential terrorist attacks. It has proven to be one of the most successful campaigns in Ad Councils more than 65-year history. Since its launch, the campaign has generated more than $703.2 million in donated media support. Individuals interested in more information about family, business and community preparedness can visit www.ready.gov or call 1-800-BE-READY to receive free materials.

“US Consulate in Japan attacked”
Mon, 14 Jul 2008 06:10:29
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “A fire bomb is thrown into the garden of the US Consulate General compound in Japan’s southern island of Okinawa, Japanese police say.
A Molotov cocktail was thrown in the garden and burned itself out in the early hours of Monday, said Okinawan police official Yasuhiko Yoshinaga. No one was injured in the attack.
The police was alerted about the attack by a local resident who told authorities that a person driving a black motorbike fled the scene after the attack, AP reported.
More than 25,000 US troops are based in Okinawa which is located 1,600 kilometers (1,000 miles) south of Tokyo.”
Something for the bad guys to think about.
Let’s hope Americans and Canadians are following this case. -Cindy

Hebrew Univ. to Readmit Convicted Terrorist to Chemistry Lab

[For Channel 2 TV report: www.keshet-tv.com/VideoPage.aspx?MediaID=40798&CatID=330&CurrentCatID=330 ]
(IsraelNN.com) A professor at Hebrew University wants to allow a convicted Arab terrorist who stole bomb-making materials from his chemistry lab to be allowed back to the lab, Channel 2 TV reported Sunday.
Six years ago, 160 liters of acetone - a chemical which is used for making the common explosive acetone peroxide - disappeared from the Laboratory for Medicinal Chemistry at Hebrew University in Jerusalem. The theft led to an investigation by the Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet), which in turn led to the arrest of Adel Hadmi, a doctoral student at the laboratory.
According to Channel 2, Hadmi was convicted of being a member of a terror cell that planned suicide attacks against Israelis. In addition, he recruited other Arabs to the cell. He was convicted and jailed but is now free again, and would like to complete his doctoral studies in the very same laboratory the acetone was stolen from.
Prof. Goldblum thinks otherwise
The laboratory’s previous director, Prof. Avi Domb, adamantly vetoed the idea of Hadmi’s return, but his successor, Prof. Amiram Goldblum, thinks otherwise. Goldblum, one of the founders of radical leftist group “Peace Now,” said that the university has no grounds to refuse to readmit Hadmi and allow him to finish his doctorate, because he has already been punished and served his jail sentence. Last week, the lab’s students were told to free a table in the lab for Hadmi.
Domb, who was shocked to hear of Goldblum’s decision, wrote a letter to the university in which he said that allowing the convicted terrorist back to the scene of his crime was both irresponsible and immoral. Students in the lab also protested but as of now, the university has not rescinded the decision to let the terrorist back in. The university did say, however, that he will probably not be allowed near dangerous substances because of his terrorist past.
According to watchdog group CAMERA, Prof. Goldblum was considered a radical even by his colleagues in Peace Now “after he explained away Saddam Hussein’s Scud attacks and threats of annihilation as due only to Israel’s alleged failure to make concessions to the Palestinians.” In 1990, after an Arab stabbed and killed three Israelis in the Baka neighborhood of Jerusalem where Goldblum lives, “even his own neighbors began to stone his house in frustration at what they saw as his outspokenly pro-PLO views.”

“Mexican cartels ‘threaten state’”
“Mexican police have faced a surge of drug-related crime”
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “The head of Mexico’s intelligence service has said that drug cartels are threatening the country’s democratic institutions, including Congress.
Guillermo Valdes told the Financial Times newspaper that drug traffickers were trying to take over the power of the state.
Gangs have infiltrated police forces, justice departments and government bodies, he said.
Mexico has seen a sharp increase in drug-related violence this year.
Mr Valdes, who is the head of Cisen, the government’s intelligence agency, said he could not rule out the possibility that drug money was involved in the campaigns of some members of the national Congress.
Lucrative trade
“Drug traffickers have become the principal threat because they are trying to take over the power of the state,” he told the Financial Times and a small group of foreign media.
The gangs, he said, had grown wealthy from the lucrative drugs trade and had recruited members of police forces, the judiciary and government organisations in order to protect their business.”
