House Democrats Call for Nationalization of Refineries

Urgent: House Democrats call for nationalization of refineries

Per Pergram-Capitol Hill

House Democrats responded to President's Bush's call for Congress to lift the moratorium on offshore drilling. This was at an on-camera press conference fed back live.

Among other things, the Democrats called for the government to own refineries so it could better control the flow of the oil supply.

They also reasserted that the reason the Appropriations Committee markup (where the vote on the amendment to lift the ban) was cancelled so they could focus on preparing the supplemental Iraq spending bill for tomorrow.

At an off-camera briefing, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) said the same. And a senior Republican House Appropriations Committee aide adds that "there were multiple reasons for the postponement" including discussion on the supplemental. But the aide said there was the thought that Democrats may wish to avoid a debate today on energy amendments.

Here are the highlights from briefing

Rep. Maurice Hinchey (D-NY), member of the House Appropriations Committee and one of the most-ardent opponents of off-shore drilling

1115

We (the government) should own the refineries. Then we can control how much gets out into the market.

Hinchey on why they postponed the Appropriations markup

1119

I think there aren't enough votes for the Peterson amendment. It wasn't taken up (the Interior spending bill) because of the omnibus Appropriations bill. That's the main focus of the Appropriations Committee.

Rep. Rahm Emanuel (D-IL)

1116

They (Republicans) have a one-trick pony approach.

Rep. Nick Rahall (D-WV), Chairman of the Resources Committee

1106

You cannot drill your way out of this.

Rep. Ed Markey (D-MA), chairman of the House Select Committee on Global Warming

1111

The White House has become a ventriloquist for the oil and gas energy.

It is time yet?

This won’t stop with oil. It is only the first step to the rebirth of the Soviet style system that the elites have been dreaming of for so long.

They’re not talking about the free flow of oil. He means the rationing of oil to the market to better control prices.

So, in controlling the flow of oil and gas by politics, if you are not a member of Das Partei, you can’t drive? Buy food? Go to work, school, on vacation?

Tell me this idea comes from an American.

Unfre*Kinbelievable.

Yeah, that’s what I say. They want a failed, goverment owned, forbidden for anyone else, petrochemical industry, to extract money from it each time pork projects are called upon. A Demok Rat’s golden dream.

I see names like Hoyer and Hinchey, but you all know the real “brains” behind this was Maxine “Muddy” Waters....she let it slip a few weeks ago in the cross examination of the oil company spokesman that “this Liberal” would like nationalization,”the government” taking over their industry.Of course, she had to have a Dem controlled Congress, and White House in mind as “the Government”, because that’s the only way it would be a slam dunk.
I’ve heard recent “polls” just today , though, underlining the general majority belief that “most” Americans believe the Oil COmpanies make too much money and they’d like to see them weakened, or punished in some way, and that’s a necessary first step toward nationalization.
The Left is always testing the waters with their polling, while “telling” Americans “what they believe”, in order to create a synthetic fictional electorate that can be tricked into believing what it already “believes”.
Anyway, it turns out Maxine’s statement was “Policy-in-the-making” and not just a “slip” of the resentful Marxist tongue....they’ve got a snowball’s chance in hell of actually doing this, but they’ll figure out a hundred indirect ways to undermine Capitalism. It’s what they live for. Miserable bastards.

They (Republicans) have a one-trick pony approach.

As opposed to the Democrat's too stupid to do any tricks jackass approach.

I read it (and The Fountainhead and Anthem) when I was in highschool. I became a fan of Rand.

I... never thought our government would actually nationalize oil. Rand knew what she would talking about.

I like her work a lot but I sometimes think she was a bit too serious :) I haven’t re-read them but I did watch ‘The Fountainhead’ a few weeks ago.

Hollyweird was thinking about making an AS movie awhile back., LOL at the irony of that.

Dumb statement. How does owning a refinery guarantee the free flow of oil?

Wake up, man. That is like asking how Ahmed flying the plane is going to guarantee a safe landing. What these America-hating traitors want to guarantee is that there is NO free flow of oil!

PRIOR to the Bush Presidency, I remember saying that everything was a mess...Gays were screaming, blacks were screaming, we were overtaxed, SS was a mess...And everytime I phoned a government office, I heard: SPANISH...

Then 9-11 happened. For a few days, we were all on the same page.

Little did I know that we were in for 8 years of Bush Bashing.

I thank God for President Bush and his leadership in fighting the war on terror. 9-11 is Clinton's legacy...The President who did nothing. The President who preyed...not prayed.

...no more corn should be allowed to be converted to fuel.

WRONG!!! The owner of the corn should decide what happens to the corn, and the rest of us should have no input into the matter (neither telling them what to do nor subsidizing their decision.)

It’s woody from the movie “Bananas” ... Sylvester Stallone had a bit part as a NY Subway thug in the funny movie.

Sadly, I’m starting to see the Democrats as ones who took that film seriously.
