It turns out that Hugo Chávez is an adaptable man. The Venezuelan president, who has championed and almost certainly helped arm Colombias FARC rebels, called last week for the rebels to lay down their weapons and unconditionally surrender their hostages. We suspect this change of heart has been driven more by self-interest than conviction. Mr. Chávez is increasingly unpopular at home and increasingly isolated abroad, especially as evidence has mounted of his meddling in Colombia. The change nevertheless is welcome and well timed.
The FARC, which long ago chose drug trafficking over liberation, has been under assault from Colombias Army and looks as if it is unraveling. The United States, Colombia and all of Venezuelas neighbors should press Mr. Chávez to use all of his influence to get the rebels to demobilize.
There is good news inside Venezuela too. On the same weekend that Mr. Chávez turned on the FARC, he suspended a chilling new law he had enacted by decree that would have forced Venezuelans to cooperate with the intelligence services or go to jail. He has also withdrawn a school curriculum that blasted capitalism as a force to subjugate the people.
With Venezuelas economy slowing and its inflation rate the highest in Latin America, Mr. Chávezs approval rating has plunged since December, when he narrowly lost a referendum that would have given him even more power and allowed him to run for re-election indefinitely. With gubernatorial elections coming in November, he apparently decided he needed a political makeover.
Mr. Chávez has a lot further to go. He must stop all aid to the FARC. He must stop using the levers of the state to harass his political opposition at home.

Kinda of a retarded attempt by the NY Slimes to be cute. Don’t worry they are still as biased and innaccurate as always.
Chavez is losing ground in his “revolution”. That is the bottom line here. He will not be relected in 2012, and probably does not have the popularity to change the constitution or consolidate his position before then. People have caught on to his B.S.
“Take your country BACK from the communist A**hole...”
Why don’t we do covert ops anymore to facilitate just such things??? Same for Ahmedinejad’s overthrow.
What I’m wondering w/this seemingly big change in Venezuela maybe leaving Columbia alone - do you think we now have a PRAYER of getting the Columbia Free Trade Agreement on the table sometime this year for a VOTE???

Hey NY Times. If you like what Hugo Chávez did for Venezuela just wait until you see what Barack “Hugo Lite” Obama has in store for the US. No need to nationalize the energy companies when you can just confiscate their profits. Then he’ll want to raise gas taxes so he can give an energy rebate to the poor.
COUNTERTERRORISM BLOG.org: "ABOUT BOUT & THE DEA" by Aaron Mannes (BLOG ENTRY SNIPPET: "The recently unsealed indictment of arms-trafficker extraordinaire Victor Bout is an interesting read. Perhaps the most notable line is on page 10, when Bout told the DEA operatives (who he believed represented the FARC) that America was also his enemy and their fight was his fight. Another international arms dealer, Monzar al-Kasser, who was arrested in a DEA sting, promised the informants to raise an army for the FARC in order to fight the Americans.") (May 9, 2008, 05:05 pm)

Venezuelans recruited by the Interior Ministry trained by Hezbollah
ARTICLE SNIPPET: Via Noticias 24, journalist Patricia Poleo reports that Venezuelans of Arab ancestry are being recruited under the auspices of Tarek el Ayssami, Venezuelas vice-Minister of the Interior, for combat training in Hezbollah camps in South Lebanon.
I have not been able to cross-reference the information in her article, however, the information is specific and detailed enough that it merits review.
Bearing that in mind, here is my translation of Poleos article. If you use the translation, PLEASE CREDIT ME.
Hugo Chavez pretends to cut back on his support of the FARC, when his dangerous associations go well beyond the Colombian guerrilla.
Presently young Venezuelans are being recruited for training in Lebanon.

A Venezuelan journalist is reporting that Hugo Chavezs government is recruiting young men to train with Hezbollah for the purpose of asymmetrical warfare against the US.
Fausta has the translation.
Hugo Chavez pretends to cut back on his support of the FARC, when his dangerous associations go well beyond the Colombian guerrilla.

Ping.
It takes a real idiot to ruin the economy of a country with Venezuela’s resources. Looks like Hugo was up to the task.
Thank you Rodguy911.
My friend, Hugo’s buddies are controlling Congress. Do some background research on SanFran Nancy Pelosi, and the Progressive Caucus.
We are undermined from within.
That’s the reason we don’t do covert ops like we should anymore.
Clinton and his traitorous crew took care of that.
“My friend, Hugos buddies are controlling Congress. Do some background research on SanFran Nancy Pelosi, and the Progressive Caucus.”
of course, I know where these despicable, traitorous people now running senate/congress. but please help me here - since when did covert/deep ops - cia, nsa et al - run things by the legislators???
Since they started being more worried about the DemoComs prosecuting them than being worried about the enemies of the country.
Iran-Contra for one...
