Clinton's supporters vent their frustration
LA Times ^ | 1 June 08 | Faye Fiore

WASHINGTON -- The hotel where the 30 Democratic rule makers met Saturday -- to decide whether rules are rules or whether rules are made to be broken -- was within howling distance of the National Zoo.

Outside the stately Marriott Wardman Park Hotel were clusters of women with "Hear Me Roar" placards in their fists who came from all over the country -- $4 a gallon be damned -- to make what could be a last stand for their Hillary.

Democratic National Committee rules and bylaws committee members, from left, Donna Brazile, Elaine Kamarck and Alice Germond vote on how to seat Florida delegates during a meeting in Washington. (LM Otero / Associated Press) May 31, 2008

"Blog this."
4:58 PM Sat, May 31, 2008
Todd J. Gillman

The ballroom is far emptier than it was nine hours ago. The Rules committee is still meeting privately. Michigan is the sticking point, by all accounts.

A woman in an "Every Vote Counts" T-shirt, a Hillary supporter, comes over and asks if I'm blogging. She's ticked. The committee said they'd come back at 4:15. It's now 6.

"You should blog this," she says. "It's totally disrespectful to the people here, whether they're Obama or Hillary."

Her name is Alice Rickel. She's a lawyer from Cleveland. People came from all over the country to watch this meeting, she says. One group just left because they've got to pay $100 for each extra hour they keep the bus driver.

She's a lawyer, she says. She understands that negotiations take time, and sometime are best done behind closed doors. She just likes the judge to come out and say when the case is continued.

"This whole thing is all about whether or not they disrespect voters. They can send somebody out and say, we're trying to negotiate a settlement, bear with us."

It scares me to think that those three women are actually deciding things for American people.

I thought the woman in the picture was having a tough time with the date. Or some other really hard question like “when was the War of 1812?”.
No one should allow themselves to photo’ed with their mouth open like that, (repeated shudders!)

[snip] Harold Ickes, Clinton’s representative to the DNC, expressed support for the Florida proposal, but said the solution for Michigan’s dispute would “hijack” the votes of more than half a million voters in the state. “This motion will hijack, hijack, remove four delegates won by Hillary Clinton and most importantly reflect the preferences of 600,000 Michigan voters,” he said, according to MSNBC. “This body of 30 individuals has decided that they are going to substitute their judgment for 600,000 voters.” [end]

[Clinton advisor] Harold Ickes’ parting shot suggests more Democratic turmoil

[snip] Ickes’ admonition on Michigan means that the Clinton camp has not signed off on the new “magic” number: 2,118 delegates. And that means any claim by Obama to be the presumptive nominee will carry an asterisk — perhaps all the way to the late-August convention in Denver.[end]

Note that number — 2118 delegates now needed for the nomination. This is part of the compromise over these delegations, and buys Hillary time, which means, the fun continues until the convention, barring some last minute assassination (god forbid). I’m just glad the Demwits have a strong devotion to rules and law. (snicker)

The best new is, no matter what the outcome of the nomination fight, no matter what happens in November, HOWARD DEAN IS GONE! Yes, I know that many people have considered him “gone” for a long time, at least as long ago as his “yeaaaghhhh!” performance, but he’s going to be the fall guy for this delegate mess, as well he should be. Carl Levin will of course stick like a bug on flypaper to his job.
