Afghanistan to Ask NATO for Bigger Army

Afghan officials will go to the NATO summit in Romania Thursday with a request: pay to increase our national Army by 40 percent. A bigger Army, Afghan officials argue, will allow the US and other coalition members to scale back in the coming years.

This appeal comes amid pleas from the US and Canada for other NATO members to commit more to the Afghanistan mission, which many analysts say has floundered over the past year for lack of resources and a coherent strategy. France is expected to contribute another 1,000 forces and Germany is likely to make a bigger commitment.

But American and Afghan government sources with knowledge of the expected Afghan proposal say that an increase from the current authorization of 86,000 Afghan Army soldiers to 120,000 is the only way to create an enduring defense against a resurgent Taliban and elusive Al Qaeda operatives. The GOVT must be having some sort of exercise today in WA State. I was driving home on the I-90 ( Issaquah ) and saw all of these unmarked sedans, Suv’s and big brand new shiny box trucks with radar like things, all with US GOVT License Plates. Some were on the Freeway some were waiting on On-Ramps, the whole thing was very X-Files. The Box Trucks were very strange indeed, Limo Tint Black on the windows, they must do something funky.

I was thinking maybe a test of some kind, but if there is a limo there; it’s probably all security for someone important visiting the area.

“Doctor gets probation for making Sea-Tac bomb threats”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “A Tennessee physician who phoned in three bomb threats to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport last year to keep his plane from leaving without him has been given three years of probation and ordered to 500 hours of free medical service to the poor.

Kou Wei “James” Chiu, 32, of Nashville, told U.S. District Judge Richard Jones that he realized he was fortunate for not going to prison, and said he was grateful for the “consideration” shown him by federal authorities and their recommendation for probation.

Chiu had faced up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Mike Lang defended the government’s recommendation for a lenient sentence, saying Chiu had a “unique constellation” of qualities, including no criminal history and the ability to pay back society with medical care.

Chiu claimed in court documents that he had failed to take his antidepressants responsibly in the days leading up to his arrest and that his “impulsive” action was connected to a “maniclike episode” brought on by fluctuating drug levels.”

Three terrorists killed, including would-be suicide bomber

BAGHDAD – Coalition forces killed three terrorists, including a would-be suicide bomber, while targeting al-Qaeda in Iraq operatives in central and northern Iraq Thursday.

Four suspected terrorists were also detained during the course of operations.

East of Mahmudiyah, Coalition forces on Thursday targeted an individual allegedly planning to carry out a suicide bombing attack in conjunction with the Baghdad car-bombing network. During the operation, three men in a vehicle attempted to elude the assault force, and Coalition forces engaged to stop the vehicle. All three men in the vehicle were killed, including the alleged suicide bomber.

While targeting a bombing coordinator in Mosul, Coalition forces detained one suspected terrorist.

Coalition forces conducted a precision operation in northwest Sinjar, capturing a suspected foreign terrorist facilitator with alleged ties to al-Qaeda in Iraq – or AQI – senior leaders. As the ground force approached, the wanted individual shot himself in the leg while drawing his weapon to engage Coalition forces. He was treated on scene and transported to a military medical facility. In a similar raid, the ground force captured another alleged associate of AQI senior leaders, as well as an additional suspect west of Baghdad.

“While Iraqi and Coalition forces are taking apart al-Qaeda in Iraq networks, capturing or killing their members, al-Qaeda remains the biggest threat to security and stability in Iraq, and there is still much work to be done,” said Maj. Winfield Danielson, MNF-I spokesman.

Police: Suspicious Package Report False

TEXAS CITY — A report of a suspicious package at the port turned out to be false, police said Thursday.

A man in a pickup pulled to a guard shack shortly after 8 p.m. Wednesday at 605 Dock Road and insinuated he had a suspicious package in the vehicle, police said.

Authorities shut down the immediate area, but police said the incident was unfounded. Police charged the man with filing a false report.
