Beyond the lack of real scientific interest and the vilification of all who dare to examine facts, beyond the careless rhetoric of David Suzuki, other scientists and their supporters, the environmental movement is doing irreparable damage to itself and to its cause.
Thats what happens when environmentalists mandate the replacement of Edisons incandescent light bulb with a tiresome contraption that if broken releases a toxic amount of mercury in your home. And thats leaving out the fact that prolonged exposure to fluorescent light bulbs have in some cases been shown to affect the nervous system (Id joke that this may be the reason for the jeering attitude of the environmental leaders, except this is no laughing matter). When environmentalists ban clearing of underbrush in California, leading to uncontrollable forest fires near densely populated areas, when they ban prudent tree cutting in other states that would serve to prevent forest fires and when they stop any oil refinery from being built in North America for 30 years, leading to our continent to be the only one on the globe not producing more oil since 2002 (save Antarctica), they damage their movement irreparably.

The mercury is toxic, but the amount is much too small to make you sick.
Folks I know who work in lighting tell me that the “eco-friendly” flouroescent bulb puts out only like 40 percent of the spectrum, compared with a full color spec from incandescent. Incandescent bulbs are much healthier for perception. Flourescent bulbs are bad news. Professional artists totally reject them for a very good reason.
Sherman,
The EPA strongly advises hiring a waste management company if one breaks. Google the article about the lady in Maine who had to wall off her kid’s bedroom until she could come up with $2,000.
How many people are going to dispose of them properly? Our town only accepts recycling for electronics once a week and that is after you go to the town office to pay for the disposal. A lot of folks are just going to slip these into the regular trash which will end up in landfills.
-—and then there are some people who will dispose of them in storm sewers, just to poke a stick in the eye of the idiots that got us to this state of affairs-—
Yes. I agree. I hate CFLs because they put out an ugly light. But I am continuously told how "great" they are. No, they're not.
Well, then there's that. LOL It is maddening.
I’ve read where they recommend evacuating the room for 20 minutes after it breaks. Especially if you have children.
EPA actually recommends hiring a special cleanup company. And they’re not known to be overcautious.
Not true at this time. Here are the EPA's present recommendations.

They do mention they are reviewing the situation based on the Maine study.
It is still hazardous though, even without the Maine DEP study and their stricter recommendations, the EPA still finds it dangerous until ventilated. The affect of working ones on the nervous system also needs to be considered. All in all, we're much better off with the old bulbs or possibly LEDs.
But thank you for setting me straight on the EPA position.

Oh thank you for your expertise on this. I have been stocking up on 'old' bulbs because of the reports I have read on the new ones.
Oh, would you also please inform my State Officials at the Dept of Environmental Protection?
They don't seem to know...

Under their 14 step-instructions : " What if I accidentally break a fluorescent lamp in my house? Here are two of the 14:
Ventilate the area by opening windows, and leave the area for 15 minutes before returning to begin the cleanup. Mercury vapor levels will be lower by then. *****
Carefully remove the larger pieces and place them in a secure closed container, preferably a glass container with a metal screw top lid and seal like a canning jar.1 A glass jar with a good seal works best to contain any mercury vapors inside.
I do notice, though, that the state has eliminated their original instruction about wearing a face mask and protective clothing...
These bulbs have to be disposed of at toxic waste facilities - in gasket sealed glass jars. Then what? It doesn't just disappear from there. It has to be treated - etc. How much is that going to add to the REAL cost of these little bombs?
And ponder this: How many tens of thousands of these little bombs will be tossed in peoples regular garbage and off to dumps all over the country?
And will we be looking at unsurmountable toxic waste cleanups down the line?
How the H E double L can these things be better than what we now use?
Can anyone say "another scam to force everyone to buy a product 'someone' with lots of initial stock in - will make millions? CAn someone say SCAM.
Not to mention that there are 100 other and more efficient ways to save much more energy before you even get close to light bulbs. Of course, these other ways would only save money for the individual household - by cutting down the bill. So let's not bother with those.
Lastly - If a person can not see how unconstitutional it is for the Federal Government to mandate even what kind of light bulb we will burn in our homes = that person is either a liberal or ...well
Quantifying : fluorescent lights go dim-bright-dim-bright 60 times/sec with the alternating current. Your brain reads the optic nerve input about 40 times/sec. Thus you get a beat frequency that the brain has to constantly adjust for. This gives some people severe headaches in what we architects call SICK buildings. This “snow job” the lobbyists did on the lawyers in DC, for the fluorescent light bulb mfgrs, is all too typical; maybe we need to UNSCREW them...
