Gaza runs out of cement to build graves

Palestinian officials warned of a humanitarian and environmental disaster in Gaza, due to a shortage of cement to build graves in which to bury the dead.

"The situation in Gaza is tragic," said Deputy Minister Abdullah Jarboa of the Palestinian Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs, according to Quds Press.

"The sick are not allowed to seek treatment outside, medicines are not allowed in, and there is no cement to build graves," Jarboa said.

After the Islamic Hamas movement took control of the poor and densely-populated enclave in mid-June, Israel closed the Gaza crossings to all but essential food products.

If the crossings remain closed and no more cement is allowed into the strip, a real crisis will take place, Jarboa warned.

He added that the Ministry builds one thousand graves every year, but there are few left and new ones need to be built.

According to Jarboa, many existing graves are in danger of erosion because they are built using tin sheets instead of concrete from the last time Gaza ran out of cement due to the Israeli blockade seven years ago.

Jerboa pleaded with the International Community, the Arab League, and the Organization of Islamic Conference to exert pressure on Israel to lift the embargo and allow food, medicine, and cement into the strip.

Yes, Palestinans can make plenty of rockets, so let them sweat this out. No one should be giving them handouts while they are doing this. If people keep on giving them handouts, they will never learn.

Maybe they’re building bunkers, and calling them graves.

They say its dangerous to make lists but if they made a list of peoples contribution to mankind, I would think the palies would be at the bottom.

Doesn't Gaza have a border crossing with Egypt? Why don't they bring in supplies from that country into Gaza?

Palestinian ex-Prime Minister Ahmed Qurie, Fatah faction, and his extended family owned (and probably still own) every cement company in Gaza.

The Qurie clan went so far as to sell millions of dollars worth of cement to Israel to build the barrier wall. The family, seeing that they were and are the highest level of VIPs in Fatah in Gaza, have probably deserted Gaza, and have had their cement companies looted by Hamas gunmen.

Now Hamas has no cement, and they expect the American taxpayers to pay for them to get free cement.

that’s hysterical!

“...Television footage showed cement trucks leaving the Al-Quds company and driving to the Jewish settlement of Maale Adumim, a few kilometres away.

A Palestinian MP said there was “evidence” that Mr Qurie was selling cement to Maale Adumim. He said Mr Qurie transferred ownership of the company to another member of his family just a few months ago, which strengthened suspicions he was involved in improper activities.

Mr Qurie is one of the most vocal opponents of Jewish settlements and the separation barrier.

Great point.

Fascinating how rpg’s flow through like a sieve in a dam, but their arab brothers can’t bring them water, food or clothes?

They wanted Israel out of Gaza, and they left, but now they launch rockets into Israel and STILL cry it’s all the Isra-eeeelis fault????

Cement? I’ve lived all over in the world, in a variety of cultures, and have never heard of cement being a normal part of grave “building”.

In many, if not most jurisdictions in the United States, it is required that graves be lined with a concrete vault. This is to prevent contamination of groundwater and also prevents later collapse of the grave. I'm not sure if that is what they are talking about here.

----------------------------

If I'm not mistaken the largest cement company is/was owned by Abbas' family. They sold Israel the cement to build the barrier. Perhaps they only sell cement in the West Bank.

Many (most?) coffins go into a vault. They put the slab on it and cover it over.

Never heard of a concrete requirement.

The casket typically goes into a metal box for that purpose.

I suppose you could use concrete.
