Guess Harry still has quite grasped why he has a 19% approval rating.

Note to the voters of Nevada, one of your Senators has gone insane. Please send a sane one next time.

As odious and repulsive as Reid is, we should remember that it was the president and the SecDef who threw General Pace overboard, not Dingey Harry.

Pace Described as "Quiet and Strong" in Combat [W. Thomas Smith Jr.]

This e-mail from a Marine officer-turned-Arkansas farmer who fought — and was wounded twice — in the Battle of Hue (in which then-2nd Lieutenant Peter Pace also fought), one of the bloodiest battles of the Vietnam War: I just finished reading your article of June 11 about Pete Pace. It was excellent, and I also enjoyed reading about some of the other celebs that were Marines.

I was a 2nd Lt. in Golf Company, 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines at Hue City in 1968. I was wounded twice during the battle.

Pete Pace and I have been friends for many years. I was in Miami in 2000 when he received his fourth star from then-CMC [Commandant of the Marine Corps] James L. "Jim" Jones — another good friend of mine. Pete has been the guest speaker at the Hue City Memorial weekend held every year in Mayport, Florida — usually aboard the USS Hue City (CG-66). I attended his ceremony in '05 when he became Chairman. I hope to go again for his retirement around the 1st of October.

If I were Pres. Bush I would have re-appointed Pete for a second term and in the same breath pardoned Scooter Libby.

The Dems are going to do everything to embarrass Pres. Bush during his last 18 months as president.

I think Harry Reid is a wimp, who acts like a sissy, and could not lead a platoon of Marines to the head (latrine).

Anyway, I got out of the Marines in 1970. I now farm in eastern Arkansas, raising soybeans, rice and wheat.

I hope that some day our paths may cross.

Bill Rogers

Incidentally, Bill Rogers was 3rd Platoon commander, Golf Company 2/5 at Hue.

Pace commanded 2nd Platoon, also Golf 2/5 at Hue.

Rogers was wounded before Pace got to Hue, so they didn't actually meet during the battle. But they have since been good friends.

In a phone conversation after the above e-mail was sent, Rogers tells me:

It was apparent to anyone who served with him — and I know many who did — from the beginning that Pete was a good commander. He rarely raised his voice. Didn't rush into things like so many other lieutenants who got themselves killed. In combat, Pete thought things through. He was always calm. Accomplished what needed to be done, but protected his men. He was quiet and strong.

Also, here's an interesting piece that talks about the kind of young leader Pace was in combat.

Bush and Gates aren’t fit to wipe General Pace’s behind. It is to their eternal disgrace that they fired this brave man because of the Sodomy Lobby. God bless him for refusing to resign.

Pace Described as "Quiet and Strong" in Combat

Gen. Pace recently gave a lecture in my area. He said that the first time one of the men in his command was killed in Viet Nam, he was so angry that he called in an air strike on the village where he thought the fire might have originated. After a more experienced officer asked him: "Are you sure you want to do this?", Pace called off the air strike. When his unit entered the village they found only women and children. Gen. Pace seemed to take this experience as a great lesson.

“The reason I’m still on active duty is because of the young guys I worked with in combat who followed my orders and died. There is no way I can repay them or repay their parents or their families other than to come to work every day and try to do the best I can,” he said.

“It is why I will stay on active duty as long as my country wants me. But it’s also why, when I leave, that I’ll feel good but not content,” he continued. “I’ll feel good that I’ve done the best I can, but I’ll never, ever feel like I’ve done enough.”

This man was fired because it was going to be a “hard political fight”.

"This man was fired because it was going to be a “hard political fight”. This war has moved to the U.S. Senate and must be won there. Gates and President Bush had the perfect opportunity to put General Pace in front of a Senate chamber for his re-confirmation. Just like Ollie North viscerated and embarrassed the pompous salons of the Senate so would General Pace. It would make great TV drama, but the traitorous media would most likely refuse to air it - having been burned by Ollie before.

He was fired because his bosses were not veterans and have no idea what is required of a military leader.

It always angers me that the brave men and women in the field have to serve such pathetic lowlifes who run this government. Bush and Kerry were both "C" students and frat boy losers who only got anything in life because of family connections and money. Neither one of them are worthy to shine the shoes of a PFC. But these brave soldiers fight on and do their duty, despite the clearly dishonorable men who give them their orders. Robert Gates is nothing but an Arabist stooge who has no mettle to win this war.

I don’t know if I’d use those terms (I’m not a veteran), but there’s no doubt that Harry Reid is a mental and moral midget compared to General Pace.

I hope the voters back in Nevada have the same opinion of Reid that those nationwide do.
