Unique Thracian Symbol of Royalty Discovered in Bulgaria

11 June 2007, Monday

Archaeologists have discovered the most ancient ruler's symbol on Bulgarian territory, what was once the kingdom of the Thracian tribes.

The Bulgarian archaeologists Daniela Agre and Deyan Dichev, who are leading the Strandzha expedition, made the announcement for the exceptional finding on the Bulgarian National Radio on Monday.

The artifact was unearthed near the village of Golyam Dervent. Dichev and Agre were researching a dolmen (dolmens were the first Thracian tombs) when they noticed a frieze of intertwined zoomorphic and geometrical elements carved on the entrance of the tomb. The most interesting part of the discovery is the double-axe (labris) - a symbol of power in the Thracian society - placed inside a circle. The labris has lots of additional ornamentation on it, Dichev said. The frieze includes the images of snakes, which were the symbol of the king in the Thracian religious beliefs.

This is the first time when such an artifact is found on the territory, where Thracian tribes have lived in the 9-8 BC.

The ladris had later become the symbol of the king dynasty of the of the Odris tribes, which is the most powerful state organization in the second half of the firs millennium before Christ. The appearance of this symbol three centuries earlier shows that organizing a state has started on this territory first.

Two years ago archaeologists found similar symbol of royalty on the entrance of a neighboring dolmen. There is no doubt that these two dolmens were the tombs of a mighty clan of rulers and priests, who lived around the end of the 9th to the end of 8th century BC.

I hope in addition to eternal life, that God let’s us see everything in past history when we die.

Probably not. That would be great though!

I think we do get to know. And everything will be more clear. Did you see the video “Mountain of Fire’ - about the real Mt. Sinai? A great discovery. They found it be following the exact directions - landmarks - in the bible.

Ancient Massachusetts symbol of Royalty found in Hyanisport

A bottle of Bootlegged Scotch, still unopened showed up at the Kennedy Compound in Hyanisport where it was obviously misplaced or well hidden ,since it was unopened.

Authorities are trying to find a way to avoid returning the bottle to Senator Kennedy as they wish to retain it in its virgin unopened state and that might prove to be an impossibility if the Senator should claim it.

It is hoped that the bottle can one day be displayed alongside the gavel the Kennedy owned judge used to close down the court after Ted was found innocent of drowning Mary Jo.

That is a brazen lie. There is no way on earth a bottle of Scotch could ever escape detection and opening at the Kennedy Compound...

The rest of its case was used up paying that off. This had been kept in reserve if new evidence needed drowning.

One of the funniest movies ever. Zero Mostel’s double takes alone are worth the price of admission.

“Wasn’t Alexander the Great a Thracian?”

Seems to me Justinian, and his general, Belisarius, were both Thracians.

“The frieze includes the images of snakes,”

Ya can’t fool me ‘bout no royal tomb with snakes. I know for a fact that Conan cut off Tulsa Doom’s head and threw it down them stairs.

"One of the funniest movies ever. Zero Mostel’s double takes alone are worth the price of admission."

I was living in Juneau in the Sixties when "Forum" finally made it onto television (color TV was an innovation in those days), and remember laughing so hard I literally slid right out of my chair. When I could catch my breath, I called the TV station and requested that they show it again later in the week, and learned that mine was only one of hundreds of such requests they had received. So they played it again, and I fell out of my chair again. One of the GREATS.

Well he was born in Pella, the capital of Macedonia so I’d go with saying he was Macedonian.

If by ‘half Illyrian’ you mean his Mother’s native country, she was from Epirus, just south of Illyria.
