In the meeting, Durbin and DeLauro learned that the Chinese Government has blocked requests from the FDA to send personnel to China to inspect the facilities suspected of producing the contaminated products. The FDA first contacted the Chinese Government on April 4, 2007, but have not been granted permission to send food inspectors into the country. In response, Durbin and DeLauro sent a letter to the Chinese Ambassador to the United States, Zhou Wenzong, urging the Chinese Government to issue visas to U.S. food inspectors as quickly as possible.
"It is unacceptable that the Chinese government is blocking our food safety inspectors from entering their country and examining facilities that are suspected of providing contaminated pet food to American consumers," said Durbin. "We have asked for two things in our letter today -- that the Chinese government allow our inspectors in and that the Chinese ambassador to the United States meet with Congresswoman DeLauro and me to discuss the larger issue of contaminated food being sent to the U.S. These are reasonable requests and we hope that we can find a level of cooperation with the Chinese."
"At time when China is exporting more foods into the U.S., the Chinese are refusing to allow our inspectors in to the country to investigate the source of the pet food contamination. The FDA needs to be allowed to investigate this so we can better protect our pets and identify the source of the source of the problem. While we have a significant trade relationship with the Chinese, the investigation of the contaminated product comes first," said DeLauro.

It seems like a Chinese first strike will involve poisoning human food supplies.
1) Because the herbicides and pesticides we ban in this country are used in their country.
2)The farmers in this country can make more money growing housing developments than crops.
That’s cool. We just won’t import consumables from China anymore. My stepdaughter moved out and took the kitties with her. I’m not going to get new cats, until this whole mess is straightened out.
Since pulverized melamine is heavier than grain products and we purchase their product by the ton, China is using the melamine to exact more per ton. We’re paying them to kill us.
The FDA and other alphaber professionals ought look into what MWG weighed in per ton five years ago against what it has in the last two. 10-15% per ton would be a huge price jump per loaded cargo freighter.
The correct way to accomplish the inspections is to follow well established and WTO approved procedures.
That is, any of several multinational inspection agencies sanctioned by the various world trade bodies and respected as valid third parties should have been tasked with the project.
The agencies are Bureau Veritas, Socitie General Surveliance, Intertech Testing Service and Cotecna Inspections.

Well here we are. The Monolithic Communist Enterprise known as the People’s Republic of China is blocking inspection of their food plants.
First it was wheat gluten and now it is rice protein. Four and a half weeks into the largest pet food recall in history, no answers, no solutions and no way to know how far this contamination has spread into both animal and human food supplies”
All this from a country that declared killing of all THEIR dogs just a short time back??? Was this deliberate???
Food imports from China should be blocked without inspections.If we block them altogether our own food prices will escalate rapidly as our own corn crop is put into ethanol and is planted in a larger portion of our agriculturally prime land.
One of the problems with this is that because pet food is usually the only food pets get over and over again, they become sort of the canary in the coal mine. Humans usually eat different food daily so the dosage of poison the humans are getting is intermittent and not on a daily bases. This poison will take time to build up in humans but it will and there will be deaths from it, but we aren’t likely to see it for many months.
There I said it. Now we need to ban all Chinese food imports at the minimum and for good measure all Chinese products.
I’m confused about Natural Balance’s recall. They are only recalling the venison and rice blends, but not the others that have rice such as lamb and rice and the chicken and rice. Does anyone know why this is?
I started making my lab and boxer food a week and a half ago. I’m not going to worry about poisoning my pets. Will the U.S. do what is right and ban ALL food products from China until they allow U.S. inspectors into their country? Probably not.
Agreed!!!! Sadly , we are at the disposal of those who sign off on these trade agreements with foreign nations. Unless we grow our own food, raise our own beef, and use our own homemade supplies, we get what we GET on the shelves of our markets! Simply put, I know!!!! But that is the way I see it!!!

Very simple solution: no inspections, NO imports of Chinese products...you have 36 hours to issue visas, or we turn your boats around....
