SENATE STAFFER BUSTED FOR CARRYING WEBB'S LOADED GUN: Phillip Thompson, executive assistant to Senator James Webb (D-VA ), has been arrested by Capitol Hill Police on Monday for 'inadvertently' holding the senator's loaded gun, according to a person close to the investigation. A Senate staffer reports that Thompson was arrested for carrying the gun in a bag through security at the Russell Senate Office building while the Senator was parking his car. Thompson was booked for carrying a pistol without a license (CPWL) and for possessing unregistered ammunition.

Statement by Jessica Smith, Webb Communications Director:

"To our knowledge, this incident was an oversight by the Senator's aide. Phillip Thompson is a former Marine, a long-term friend and trusted employee of the Senator. We are still awaiting facts." Developing...

U.S. appeals court has ruled that parts of a law banning guns in Washington, D.C. are unconstitutional.

Friday’s ruling, decided in a two to one vote, struck down a provision that bans residents of the nation’s capital from keeping handguns in their homes. The court said the ban violates the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

The amendment grants “the right of the people to keep and bear arms” and allows for a “well regulated militia.”

The court also struck down a section of the law that requires owners of legally registered guns to disassemble them.

The city’s anti-handgun law, passed in 1976, is one of the most restrictive in the United States. Mayor Adrian Fenty said he is outraged by the appeals court decision, and vowed to appeal the ruling.

You're right , I believe Webb ran on a pro-gun platform. That is probably one of the items that helped him get elected .

What a dope this guy is..."

Must he can't read. Being a government building, there are usually signs all over the entrance ways warning people that contraband is not allowed, and specifically telling them weapons or ammo are not allowed inside. Just another elitist who thinks the rules apply to everyone else except them.

>>do you to register ammunition?)

I damn sure don't.

And I'm lol at Old Eagle's response. I know enough about a redleg's business, to have some idea of how that's done. I like it!

Because tons of "LOYAL" Republicans thought it was right to sit out the Election!

You republicans just don't get it do you? CONSERVATIVES sat out elections if anyone did, not republicans. The republican party betrayed conservatives for six years and then came back with the usual attitude that you're showing here of "where else are your going to go"

South Park had an episode that was kind of relevant here

The charges will be dropped for that alone. Otherwise, you could make an easy case that the action of handing the bag to Thompson was criminal, since Webb knew Thompson could not possess a gun on federal property. This will all be chalked up as "innocent mistake by a special person"(which, I'm pretty sure that's just what it was).

When did Webb violate DC Law and when did he know it?

Federal property is Federal property, but all the other stuff is DC.

What's the procedure for applying for such imperial priviledges or do they just hand out papal dispensation like it was a carbon credit or something?

Why? Are they also law enforcement officials?

They get special privileges the rest of us do not have access to because they are the ruling elites ... Congressmen and Senators are a better class of people than you and me. They are afforded certain perks that we do not deserve and should not have access to.

It's in the Constitution, donchaknow.

Wherefore we now declare that therefore the subjects of the land shall be ruled by the elite class, whoupon this Constitution of these United States doth bestow the ability to grant themsevles rights and privileges that the subjects shall not attain but shall pay for through their noseths.

Really, you should read your Constitution once in a while ...

He was carrying Webb's bag and gun, not his own. Looks like a dumb mistake really.

There are a lot of incorrect statements on this thread, but yours takes the cake.

Talk about sinking to new lows.

I'm just worried about this nut having a weapon close to President Bush.

Certainly not because of statements that he has made such as this:

These Presidents took the right kind of action, for the benefit of the American people and for the health of our relations around the world. Tonight we are calling on this President to take similar action, in both areas. If he does, we will join him. If he does not, we will be showing him the way.

Exactly what WAY will he be showing the President?

Actually, Webb got an "A" rating from the NRA. Don't be too quick to assume that a Democrat is anti-gun; or for that matter, than a Republican is pro-gun.
