Let's Vote... On Everything!
CBS News ^ | Feb. 18, 2007 | Andy Rooney

We like to think we have a democracy in this country, and we do, but we don’t vote on every issue. Our elected officials do that for us. We don’t always agree with them, of course.

For example, we didn’t vote to go to war in Iraq. We elected our leader, George W. Bush, and he and his advisers decided that was the right thing to do. If it had been put to a vote, we probably wouldn’t be there now.

It would be interesting if we all voted on the issues that come up before Congress.

For example, how would you vote on these things if you had the chance?

Iraq: Take all of our troops out of there immediately. Yes or no.

Where would you stand on this: Double the number of soldiers we have in Iraq so we can win the war in a hurry and get out. Yes, or no.

Next question: Of the 1.4 million soldiers and sailors we have in the U.S. Army and Navy, 325,000 are stationed outside the United States. Do you know what they’re all doing out there? If we brought them all back home and then reduced our military by half, that would save us about $220 billion. That’s about $700 for each of us. If you got the money in cash, would you vote for it? Yes or no?

Immigration: Last year about 700,000 legal immigrants were admitted to the United States. Legal not illegal, we don't need more people and we should stop all immigration now. Agree or disagree?

Pennies: There are now 140 billion pennies in circulation and you can't buy much of anything with one penny. Should we stop making pennies? Yes or no.

IQ: Every American should have to take an IQ test. Anyone who scored under 80 would be considered too dumb to vote. Yes or no?

I wish we could all vote on everything, but I know it's not practical. I don’t think it's unreasonable, though, for us to expect both Congress and the president to find out what we do think and to pay attention to that.

Maybe we don’t vote often enough. We only vote for who'll be president once every four years. That's a long time if we get a bad one. Agree or disagree?

A very simple civics test that required you to identify your president, vice president, senators, congressman, and governor would eliminate about 40% of the electorate, all of whom presumably vote Rat and ensure that your vote doesn't count. Don't believe me? Ask several of your coworkers if they can identify each of these people.

That may be true currently, but once the democrats or any other political organization understood that those are the only requirements, they would make sure that their constituents would be able to pass that simple test. Thus, a deeper set of tests for every issue should be instituted before anybody becomes qualified for voting.

I doubt it. I think you could post the requirements on TV (as a commercial during "Deal Or No Deal" for example), and a significant percentage of prospective voters would still fail to answer the questions correctly. And the ones who failed would be almost entirely Democrats.

This is the sort of stuff you'd expect from a sixth-grader.

I thought it WAS a sixth-grader, or a troll from DU...until I looked at the author's name!

In both cases, disaster is imminent, just in the latter it would come sooner.

Thanks, I was curious.

I'm sorry to say that most of the writers in this country still do not understand that the U.S. is not a democracy. The U.S. was established as a REPUBLIC. Now once they understand that, then lots of things will become much clearer to them.

The dems would lose too much of their voter base, so they'd never allow this to come up to a vote.

Sorry Andy, you miserable leftist apologist and lover of Jihad. We voted for a Congress that in 2002 authorized the President to declare war on Iraq. The reason he did it was because the congress was to wussified to make that decision on their own.

Here's one Andy. Should we shoot traitors to this country, yes or no?

Should we have the say in whether we give our money to Social Security or buy our own post retirement medical plans, yes or no?

Should leftwing fag hags be shipped to San Francisco, then we give the city to Mexico, yes or no?

"Democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting on what to eat for dinner.

That's why we have a representative republic instead of a democracy."

In this scenario, the wolves are taxed and the funds are provided to the sheeps congressman while the sheep eats government cheese.

No, we wouldn't. We would have vaporized 10 million Iraqis with nuclear weapons. The country was pretty pissed over that little 9/11 brouhaha.

I've concluded CBS is some kind of leftwing rest home for elderly broadcasters who are decades past their expiration date.

Pennies have been worthless for a decade. Nickles and dimes are virtually now even worthless.

Actually, they aren't. I've read that current metal prices for copper and nickel are high enough that there has been some smelting to sell the metals at a profit. The feds are apparently pursuing a few rings of criminals on this. No indication whether this is overseas or domestic smelting.

Now, where to buy pennies and nickels by the truckload...

Not true. Just think about what would happen if pennies were eliminated. All prices (retail, anyway) would rise from where they are to the next highest nickel value. Pennies keep prices down, so they actually do have some value.
