I have blue, my wife has hazel and our son has dark brown eyes.

That doesn't bother me so much.

Its the red hair and freckles that I don't understand. Neither of us has red hair or freckles.

I was talking to my neighbor the other day about it. He has red hair and freckles, so I thought that perhaps he might have some insight into the genetic transfer characteristics of those traits, but he had no idea at all.

It's a recessive trait, something hidden in either of your bloodlines for a long time.

Your neighbor seems like a helpful sort.

He's been around fixing the sink in the bedroom, too, huh?

:)

Have you checked the mailman's haircolor and complexion?

My parents were both blond-haired blue eyes, and their son was red-headed blue-eyed. Also, my cousin was red-headed and blue-eyed even though her parents weren't. I guess we had some red-headed ancestors.

Mother: Blue eyes
Father: Blue eyes
Me and both of my sisters: Blue eyes

My sister and her husband both have blue eyes and brown hair. Their son is a freckled redhead. Recessive gene they both apparently carry, or is my sister not telling me something?

Red hair, and skin light enough to freckle, are both carried on recessive genes. You and your spouse could have many generations of ancestors where this trait did NOT manifest, but the ancestors were carriers; and then when the two of you got together..

Hey, it's the luck of the draw.

I have blue, my wife has hazel and our son has dark brown eyes.

That happened in our family too. My dad has blue eyes, my mom has hazel eyes, and one of my sisters has brown eyes. Hazel is the dominant gene and would possible "cause" the brown eyes.

I have red hair and it skipped a generation in my family. My dad has Norwegian genes and he has a red beard (when he grows it), but he was a towhead as a child then turned darker as he got older. Same for my husband, who has Scots and Sicilian genetics.
