Do you prefer wine or beer? Your preference may shed some insight into the rest of your diet, according to a new study.
Researchers in Denmark found that people who buy wine also buy healthier food and therefore have healthier diets than people who buy beer. The findings are published in the online edition of the British Medical Journal.
Studies have shown that drinking wine is associated with lower risk of death from some causes. Some studies have also suggested that wine drinkers have healthier diets than beer or spirits drinkers, and this may explain wine's beneficial effect on health.
Researchers analyzed 3.5 million transactions chosen at random from 98 outlets of two large Danish supermarket chains over a six-month period. Customers were categorised as "wine only," "beer only," "mixed," or "non-alcohol" buyers. Details of items bought, the number and price of the items were recorded.
In the study, wine buyers bought more olives, fruit and vegetables, poultry, cooking oil, low-fat cheese, milk and meat than beer buyers. Beer buyers bought more ready-cooked dishes, sugar, cold cuts, chips, pork, butter or margarine, sausages, lamb and soft drinks than wine buyers.
The study supports findings from the United States, Denmark and France showing that wine drinkers tend to eat fruit, vegetables and fish and use cooking oil more often and saturated fat less often than those who prefer other alcoholic drinks.
The researchers said the findings emphasize the need to take into account diet and other lifestyle factors in studying wine's health benefits.
What the heck is wrong with bratwursts, pickles, and beer? What's unhealthy about that? Sheesh! Pickles are vegetables, right? So's mustard...stuff's made from seeds, after all.
Yeah...bratwursts...It's lunchtime.
Yeah but beer drinkers make better lovers!
so. beer drinkers can beat up wine drinkers.
Wine drinkers are also more inclined toward buggery, so there goes the healthy diet.
"What about people who drink both beer and wine?!"
We do have two hands!
"Brino's"?
So beer drinkers' might ale because their diet is wurst?
Something tells me the study was funded by the wine industry.
Let's equalize it for social class. Compare those who buy $10 bottles of wine with those who buy $10 bottles of beer. I don't think you'll find much difference then.
I would bet women drink more wine than men, and men drink more beer than women!
Gosh, I could do a study and make BIG bucks!
Do you prefer wine or beer?
Ask W. C. Fields.....who once said he had lost his lunch. When asked, what happened ...... He said, the cork came out!
I really like to make data driven decisions. So do you have a study (pause to take a sip of wine) to back up that claim?
As they used to say, one couldn't sort it out without a bottle.
Well DUH!!!! Wine doesn't go good with Fried Pork Rinds, and Hot Dogs for lunch.
Since health officials have told the public that drinking wine, esp red wine is better for your health. It stands to reason that people who are health concious will buy more wine than beer. So I agree with the article. It is really saying that people who buy healthier food include wine in their purchases. The researchers could have found this out by interviewing the people at the store.
The problem with this as a generality is that wine and beer taste different and go with different foods. I like beer most of the time over wine, (unless its really expensive wine that someone else is buying). I also try to eat healthy foods, but recognize that beer goes with a lot of foods when the weather favors cool drinks. I can't put a lot of faith in the study, but to be on the safe side, when I buy lots of healthy veggies, I will buy some wine as well. (Someone might be checking out my purchases).
Fields: I say sir, did I come in here last night and spend a fifty dollar bill on music and booze.
Saloonkeeper: Yes sir, you certainly did.
Fields: THANK GOD. I thought I had lost it.
Nothing. They are included in that so called food pyramid. ;-)
