Smoking Ban Meeting Planned For Tuesday

POSTED: 7:04 pm CDT September 19, 2005 UPDATED: 1:35 pm CDT September 20, 2005

MADISON, Wis. -- The Madison Common Council is preparing to clear the air on the city's smoking ban Tuesday night.

Many of those who have rallied to repeal the smoking ban are expected to attend Tuesday night's common council meeting.

Three smoking-related things are on the agenda including an outright appeal of the ban, an amendment to allow businesses to apply for a hardship exemption and a proposal for a citywide referendum.

"It doesn't look like there's enough votes to repeal the ban," said Mayor Dave Cieslewicz. "And at this point, it doesn't look like there are enough votes for the other options as well. At this point, it looks like the smoking ban will remain in place."

Spokesmen for the group that supports repealing the smoking ban said they have eight of the 11 votes needed for repeal.

You got a real bonnet on yourself there, don't 'cha, Bud?

Another nasty arzed anti. Our threads sure bring them out from under their rocks, don't they?

When they can't intelligently debate an issue, they result to personal attacks. We see it all the time.

I think that comment probably pissed me off more than anything else he said.

I read the complete sentence as did metesky and others. It is an AND statement.

To state what you are NOW trying to say you MEANT to say, you SHOULD have written:

"I don;t [sic] like smokers who throw their cigarettes on the road while driving."

Your home page states you have a Ph.D from IIT. This should be logical to you.

He's the one whose arrogance started it. I refuse to put up with this 'new' type of immigrant any longer, legal or illegal. If this country is good enough to welcome him in, he needs to show a little gratitude and courtesy rather than belittle Americans and tell them how to live while he pulls down his salary. This is becoming more & more common, and I refuse to keep quiet about it any longer in the name of political correctness. I am NOT going to be dictated to by someone who immigrates here-again-just for the money. He doesn't know the first thing about freedom, nor does he care.

Anger increases Blood Pressure. Increased Blood Pressure might cause sudden extra load on the old heart, nicotine coated lungs might stop functioning and the old weak heart might stop!!!

So, take a deep breath, relax and smoke some more!!!!

I do not have a need to come here for money. However, I follow the money being the gluttonous capitalist I am!!! I was requested to take up this business unit because my American predecessor screwed it up big time!!! As a result they have to outsource majority of the work to China!!!!

I do care about America. Frustrated old people should calm down, relax and stop barking like an old rabid dog. Also reading people's profiles might help.

I don't tell anyone what to do. Why instill a competitive spirit in someone (by dictating them how to live or what to do) when I can silently exploit their lack of vigour :)

Please don't go on telling people about "kicking". I understand old decaying people have a short fuse and tend to get angry very easily!!!! So no new news there!!!!

Oh, good that the old brain can "suspect" to "know" my "nationality". Keep it up and smoke more!!!!! more smoke to the smokers!!!!!

Allah? What did he do to you ?

Hi, English is not my mother tongue. I was educated in Urdu and Hindi. I started studying in English only after I came to my Bachelor's programme. While the medium of instruction in the Bachelor's programme is in English, we hardly ever spoke in English!!! All daily business is conducted in Hindi/Urdu except for the class lectures by the Professor.

I only started real English after I started interacting with my American colleagues. Believe me my friends at my company tell me the same...that "your English was horrible. Now we understand your spoken english a little better." However, I think I made a great amount of progress in the last three months. I am taking ESL (English as a Spoken Language) courses here in my company. So more credit to the instructor of ESL. She does a fantastic job helping many non-English speakers at the company to improve their ESL skills!!

Hey, anyone using Electronic technology devices made after 2001 are already dictated how to live by me and my colleagues who contributed for technology development. Change is inevitable in life. If one cannot evolve with the changes dictated by the foreign scientists like me, my chinese friends, Russians and Europeans they are bound to be lost in their frustrations!!!!

If he is arrogant then its his loss. Take no offense, our difference of opinions doesn't give us the right to use abusive language, name calling or racist religious lingo against our fellow FRiends. Just a thought. Where is he arrogant? I do not see his posts arrogant or profane. He already said he loves America. Just read his profile FRiend. I work in Hi-Tech industry myself. We need foreign techies. They bring in a wealth of knowledge and work late hours unlike me who has to go home to my family sharply at 5:00PM :D

Yes, I am selfish.

Thank you for being honest.......however the honesty of your selfishness has nothing to do with the discussion at hand.

You are entitled to your selfishness in your line of work - but have no right to it when it adversely impacts the line of work of others.

Ordinarily I would welcome one such as yourself who has chosen to immigrate to the US - in your case, at this moment in time, I cannot because of your total ignorance of the rights of private property owners and your lack of understanding of the rights of business owners. In order to enjoy the freedoms and rights of the US you must first learn to respect the rights and freedoms of others - something you have obviously not done.

Your comment regarding my sanity is nothing short of laughable and in fact I am still laughing about it - such inane repetition of the anti-smoker playbook rhetoric should be beneath the dignity of a self proclaimed "scientist."

You obviously know nothing about me - so spare me your sanctimony about consulting - "consultants" are a dime a dozen - I know, as I have been one for some 20 years.

Reasearch on this particular subject (smoking bans) happens to be one of my areas of expertise.

The reason jobs have "titles" is to stroke the egos of some members of society who need a boost in their self-esteem. The last time I "needed" a title was more than 20 years ago.

Yes, I am against smoking in public places. I do not care what you do in your house or in your yard. It is none of my business. However, banning smoking in public areas is a very good move.

Smokers usually emit unbearable stench. It is very inconvenient to sit across the table with them and conduct business. Thats why, one by one I, along with another colleague cleansed my organization. I am proud of it.

I don't think you know anthying about the value of the Engineering consultant Staff' member that work for me. I would be glad if you can get me "a dime a dozen " consultant with an MS/PhD from one of the top 10 schools and a specialization in nanotechnology VLSI. Let me know when you find "dozen" for "a dime" so I can stop paying $$$$$$ and employ a two "dozen" for "a dime" each "dozen".

My privately owned business is not public property and you are only permitted to enter with my say so.

You don't like it - go back where you came from - there are too many of your kind that were born here already - we don't need you.............
