The reason jobs have "titles" is to stroke the egos of some members of society who need a boost in their self-esteem. The last time I "needed" a title was more than 20 years ago.

Good! The reasons Computer/hardware Engineering jobs have "titles" is to indicate the level of expertise. Not to "stroke the egos". An fyi...a distinguished member of technical(or consulting) Staff usually has a Ph.D or MS (magna-cum-laude) from a reputed school or is a highly decorated achiever in Computer/Electronic/VLSI/hardware engineering areas. besides this they usually have technical patents in either the related or the above mentioned Engineering fields. They write papers, publish their work and the world follows what they have to dictate through their innovations. For example, google for Ward Vercruyse. Thats the kind of people we call Member of tech./consulting Staff. Or Yuri Apanovich or Arun Netravali or myself :) you can find my work at IEEE transactions too :) The last time I "needed" a title was more than 20 years ago.

I gave you the title in one of my earlier posts "Dr.Gabz" with an imaginary Ph.D from University of Nicotinia with a specialization in Nicotinology !!!!
