San Francisco May Regulate Blogging
Personal Democracy Forum ^ | 03/31/2005 - 3:15pm | Michael Bassik

Just when you thought the Federal Election Commission had it out for the blogosphere, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors took it up a notch and announced yesterday that it will soon vote on a city ordinance that would require local bloggers to register with the city Ethics Commission and report all blog-related costs that exceed $1,000 in the aggregate.

Blogs that mention candidates for local office that receive more than 500 hits will be forced to pay a registration fee and will be subject to website traffic audits, according to Chad Jacobs, a San Francisco City Attorney.

The entire Board is set to vote on the measure on April 5th, 2005. I wonder if they'll be forced to register their own blogs!

The legislation was written by Supervisor Sophie Maxwell.

So, I’ll do what I always do and issue a challenge!

Let’s all send quick e-mails – even just a sentence or two – to Supervisor Maxwell.

Encourage her to treat bloggers and cyber-citizens as she would treat traditional journalists and voters. When it comes to protecting our privacy and First Amendment rights, it shouldn’t matter what medium we use. Post your e-mails below so we can keep track!

From the land that gave birth to the free speech movement.

This sounds like a hoax, someone has been taken. It is hard today to separate truth from fiction however.

"If local blogger have to register won't that wipe out a lot of liberal bloggers?"

They will turn a blind eye on the liberal bloggers.

If they get away with this, our country is officially done--if it's not already.

mention candidates for local office that receive more than 500 hits

So you can't mention anyone or get any traffic?
Can a newspaper mention someone and sell copies?

This law/rule/crapola is a lawsuit waiting to happen.

Did a bunch of lawyers think this up to generate cases?? sheesh.

Why am I not surprised that the "liberal" fascists would want to stop or prohibit "free" speech, especially if it's not "liberal" "free" speech.

I lived in SF for 4 years and I hated the place and it's "citizens". Nice weather, some good restaurants, fairly convenient airport, good wine stores, but politically,...totally and predictibly always "anti-war" and anti-American. Total naive hypocrisy. Smug condescinding arrogance and hubris.

Whew! I won't have to worry about that one.

Only partly. Don't forget you have Marin County on the other side of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Hmmm. What is "local" ?
Does the blogger himself have to reside in S.F. proper?
In the Bay Area?
Suppose two people are co-bloggers - one in S.F., and one in San Jose?
Suppose the blogger person is in San Rafael, but the server is in S.F.??
Suppose the blogger person is in S.F., but the server is in San Rafael??
Suppose the blogger person is in San Rafael, and the server is in San Jose, but the electrons travel thru S.F. to get back and forth?
Suppose the blogger person is in San Rafael, and the server is in San Jose, but the subject is S.F. politics?
Do these clowns think about such things?

By seeking to 'regulate' blogging these degenerates seem genuinely afraid of it!

The genus Degenerates consist of the following species; politicians, criminals, vice addicts and others who do not belong to our society due to the very nature of their being.

http://www.havenco.com/ - located in the Principality of Sealand, off the coast of Great Britain.

They haven't built a wall around San Francisco yet, so people can still escape.

I hear it's 24 square miles surrounded by reality.

It's 49 square miles surrounded on the east, west and north by reality in the form of water. On the south, and beyond the Bay on the east and north, it's more insanity! About a hundred miles beyond, little pockets of normalcy begin to appear.

As Lee Rodgers of 560KSFO says, SF is the largest open-air insane asylum in the world!
