Georgia federal judge: Textbook stickers stating evolution is a theory not fact is unconstitutional.
Center For Reclaiming America ^

Posted on 02/17/2005 5:30:03 PM PST by Happy2BMe

News Alert:
On January 13, a federal judge in Georgia ruled that stickers placed in textbooks of an Atlanta area school district saying “Evolution is a theory, not a fact” are unconstitutional! ( View sticker.) According to this judge, such criticisms of evolution are an endorsement of religion. The judge’s action is the latest example of the nationwide effort to ban any critical analysis of the theory of evolution and insist that evolution be taught as the only option!

The Action:
The Center for Reclaiming America has launched a national petition to rally 100,000 citizens immediately to oppose this federal court edict and insist that evolution be taught as a theory, not fact, in our schools. The “Our Kids Deserve The Truth” petition has three goals:

  1. INSIST that evolution be taught as a theory, not a fact.
  2. DEFEND school administrators, teachers, parents and students that stand up for truthful teaching about evolution.
  3. SUPPORT legislative and school board efforts to ensure that our kids are taught the truth about evolution and promote

    Objective Origins in school curriculum.

We are also launching a national awareness campaign targeting millions with the “Our Kids Deserve the Truth” message. Also, through this grassroots effort, we want to empower citizens with the resources they need to effectively challenge school boards—leading them to adopt the Objective Origins curriculum.

General Relativity is a Theory that INCLUDES gravity. It attempts to explain gravity in a larger context. The smaller issue of how gravity works is a Law.

GR has been well-confirmed for several decades now and is generally believed to be true- but that is not long enough to promote it to a law. For example a geocentric model of the universe was confirmed by every prediction and observation for 1400 years- but it was wrong. It turned out another model, the heliocentric model, also explained the data.

Gravity is a Law, not a Theory.

The Law of Gravity is not the same as the Theory of Gravity.

Same with the heliocentric solar system.

State the "heliocentric solar system law". Be specific. While you're at it, state the Law of Gravity, because I suspect that you don't even know what that is.

If macroevolutionary theory "passes every experimental test for a long period of time and is generally accepted as true" then it can become a law.

Theories do not become laws.

I'm just joking with ya jpsb. You could not have read the whole thread. I know what happens toa bullet when it's fired from a rifle. I even know what happens to most bullets if they were fired from a curved barrel. They would fragment from the forces within in the barrel due to the curvature. At least they did when the Germans designed one in the 40's.

Really now? Why don't you use the Law of Gravity, as you know it, to explain how gravity works.

I knew you were kidding I should have put a smiley on my post. I had to read Classic Liberals post twice before I got what he was trying to say, my explaination should have been directed to him.

This judge no doubt voted for John "Botox-man" Kerry, who has obviously evolved from some lower life form. Maybe the judge was afraid of seeming a hypocrite when he made his decision.

I am getting in over my head here, but I believe a theroy is accepted but not proven.

You're right about this part... Once a theory is proven by observation or experimentation it becomes fact. Someon please correct me is that is not so.

You're wrong about this part. Theories are never proven. Theories are an attempt to explain "why stuff works". Theories are a general, broad explanation behind what causes observed phenomena. They can never be proven, however, they can only be supported strongly by evidence, refined as needed in light of new evidence or discarded if they are disproven (that is, if an event that the theory predicts will never happen is observed).

Does it embarass you to argue against a subject you know nothing about?

No.

A theory is an attempt to explain the relationship among observations or data points. It can never be proven, only disproven.

It will never graduate to a "law".

And the data points should not be called facts.

What subject would that be? Statism by those supporting the federal government intervening in local public schools?

Let's see, you have demonstrated that orangutans are cute.

Now, does the theory that they are cute rise to the status of Law? If an orang is not cute, should he be arrested?

Those on this thread mock God, creation, and prayer in school.

Could you point to a post where people here have mocked God?

But you draw a direct timeline from the early 1960's when prayer was banned and abortion was legalized to the downfall of morality and goodness in the heart of the average American and the rise in murder, rape, homosexuality,

Oh boy! Post hoc ergo propter hoc fallacy!

Can you actually demonstrate causation, or are you just going to assert correlation without even demonstrating that much?

I agree with you Happy that God must remain in our society or we are doomed. But attacking science only serves to make the godless ACLU want to destroy religion even more.

"Theories are never proven"

Really? Wow, that is somewhat surprising to me. But like I said I am in over my head.

Electricity is only a theory. The Bible does not say it exists. We should make it a law that no one can use electricity as it is evil science.

Judges who legislate from the bench are unconstitutional!

..."in over my head..."

Not your fault. Most pre-college science teaching is very poor.

Even most college level science teaching assumes you've magically gotten the basic idea of how science works and just jumps in to the data and procedures of that particular branch.

learning new stuff everyday. How does something like F=ma or the law of conservation of energy get to be a law?
