Just reported on AntenaTV. One of the satelite TV channels recieved in the USA. Chinese reporters were arrested for photographing patriot missile batteries control areas.
Greek security has established "secure zones" relating to security which are forbiden for any reporters to cover. These are control areas, and areas relating to security and counter terrorism.
The Chinese were not the only reporters caught. Greek security reported that they were in a forbidden zone and when caught and confronted they suddenly went "stupid". (forgive the transaltion is not exact, essentially the chinese reporter though by acting stupid the security would be fooled and release them)
Secrity is showing no mercy to reporters. Also arested were a British repoter for the Observer. (the british have been particularly brutal in greek coverage and sky news has earned the ire of the nation after a video clip of a reporter ridiculing the greek national athem made the rounds.)
Other reporters arrested were Mexican reporters who also violated secure zones.
Reporters are on notice that officials are now considering incacerating further violators until the end of the games and THEN expelling them out of the country.
Based on the officer speaking to the press, the chinese thought they could play tourist and simply be escorted out. It was not stated but the impression is that security is under scrutiny for determining counter measures in other arenas and events.
now that is a surprize!
The little blighters!
"punkers" or toned down punkers at least to look like tourists"
Hmm... When someone is in disguise as "punkers" and photographing missle silos, they sound like spys, and not reporters, to me.
red ping
The Greeks are still a bit cranky with London over that Elgin Marbles thing. With good reason I might add - imagine if the Brits had disassembled Monticello in the middle of the night and refused to give it back.
China is playing global. They have their little fingers present in each hemisphere. I view them as I did the Russians during the cold war. We just don't react to them that way though. I think that's a mistake.
China is playing global
I concur
actually the brits have agreed to return the marbles.
they will be returned and housed in a new museum next to the current acropolis museum.
There are some "face saving concessions" in terminology but they are returning.
Some the british inteligencia are upset about the return, they fear a line of nations demanding returns and there is the natural "we're smarter than you about your antiquities."
I agree about china.
but why mexico?
could some arab terrorists have literally used cheep expendable mexican labor to collect logistic info?
(Actually, if this catches on, places like the Smithsonian and MOMA are going to lose a lot of their exhibits as well. Not everything therein is American-made or born).
Probably just more terrorists hired by NBC to probe weaknesses for John Kerry.
Why Mexico indeed. We know that middle-eastern folks have been taking detailed pictures of buildings, sensitive locations, infrastructure, startegic targets. They don't need Mexican nationals to do that. We let them walk in, stay and take all the recon they want back home with them. How do we know? We get that recon from middle-eastern computers in Pakistan.
Our boys are on the case. Not to worry... smirk.
There are two types of foreign media covering the Olympics...
The first type are terrorists, enemies, or potential enemies looking for weaknesses in American and allied weapons systems.
The second type are allied nationals looking to be the first to break a story about a weakness in the security... Ratings matter more than the lives they may put at risk.
There was a CBS story that basically said there is no secuirty.
Hopefully reporters in Jail, will provide job clarity to reporters whose irresponsibility may get some of us killed.
Maybe the reporters in Athens who give aid and comfort to our terrorist enemies can give us a report on the jail food.
AntenaTV. One of the satelite TV
?? why is a satellite channel called AntenaTV?
