SEOUL, June 23 (Reuters) - South Korea's National Security Council, which advises President Roh Moo-hyun, met on Wednesday to discuss the killing by Muslim militants of a South Korean hostage in Iraq.
The Council's standing committee issued the following statement after the meeting:
(Translation by Reuters. About 180 words)
1. The government strongly condemns the killing of Kim Sun-il by a terrorist group in Iraq as an inhumane act of terror.
2. The government decided to ask for cooperation with the Iraqi interim government and coalition forces to resolve the incident and push for the early repatriation of the victim's body.
3. The government decided to direct the work of the task force in Iraq to resolve the incident in cooperation with resident embassy staff and decided to form and operate a joint management committee for this.
4. The government has decided to strengthen safety measures to prevent similar incidents and to seek the early withdrawal all South Korean civilian residents, excluding essential personnel.
5. Our government's basic spirit and position has not changed. We confirm that again because our troop deployment is for reconstruction and humanitarian aid support for Iraq.
"4. The government has decided to strengthen safety measures to prevent similar incidents and to seek the early withdrawal all South Korean civilian residents, excluding essential personnel."
When the going gets tough, run.
I think this is a righteous response to the atrocity. I don't fault the S Koreans for removing non essential personnel.
If I were them, I'd step up the military force to show strength.
I think it's a common-sense measure...
The soldiers will be coming, anyway.
The South Korean Military has some real kick butt and take no name types in its ranks. Perhaps they will have an opertunity to demonstrate their skills in dispatching the enemy. Just a shame these bad guys don't live in a jungle.
6. We've decided to increase the number of troops we are sending to Irag to 10,000 including the nastiest hard-core commandos in Korea... all armed with big frickin knives that are perfect for cutting off rag heads.
I wonder what responses they aren't telling us about. I wouldn't be surprised if the bodies of some dead terrorists were found in the next week or so.
We've decided to increase the number of troops we are sending to Irag to 10,000 and they will be bringing a double-00 ass kicking with them when they come.
I know it sounds coldhearted to blame the victim here, but any civilian who stayed in Iraq (or anywhere else in the Middle East, for that matter) after the Nick Berg incident really should have had a psychiatric exam.
Essentially you are right. For every hostage taken, the appropriate government should very visibly send 50 additional troops to Iraq. If a hostage is executed, send another 100. You must make hostage taking visibly counter productive to the hostage takers. Increasing security measures and evacuating personnel sends the message that the hostage takers a hitting a nerve.
I agree with the above but by a factor of 10 or even 100!
I'd be more specific in my military tactics - for every beheading, BLOW UP A MOSQUE~ Tell them if they take any hostages, we send in an F16 to blow up the biggest Mosque and list them one by one in order of importance! And don't just limit them to Iraq either! IT IS A HOLY WAR and we're the only ones NOT fighting it THAT WAY!
U.S. State Dept reccommends the same thing. Of course they are amoungst Bush's worst enemies. Most of Washington runs on leaks from these career mostly morons.
They are sending the additional 3000 troops. I don't think I'd call that running.
Why? The ROKs had adapt to the jungle of Vietnam, (no jungles in Korea, in fact the winters are pretty harsh, especially in the north). They will adapt to the dessert and urban areas of Iraq.
Withdrawing "NON ESSENTIAL" personel is your idea of running?
When the going gets tough, post brave comments on an Internet forum sitting on an American obese ass in an easy chair. Anonymously, of course.
The U.S. embassy has essentially done the same thing, asking all civilians to leave. This happen after Nick Berg
