French President Emmanuel Macron has warned that France is headed towards a “civil war” if his party does not win the upcoming parliamentary elections. After a bruising defeat by Marine Le Pen’s conservative National Rally party during the European elections earlier this month, Macron called snap parliamentary elections. Both National Rally and the far-left France Unbowed are riding high in the polls and could hold a parliamentary majority if the election goes their way.

Six RAF Eurofighter Typhoons sit on the taxiway, engines roaring on two, as the ground staff hurry about, adding the finishing touches before take-off. In the distance, a cloud of dust rises in the summer haze over the construction site of the second runway, 3.5km (2 miles) long, beside the first. The hot northerly wind buffets the new hangars and the old. Mihai Kogalniceanu (MK) airbase takes its name from the village nearby, itself named after a 19th Century liberal politician. Now, it is the unlikely setting for what is turning into the biggest Nato base in Europe, bigger even...

The left-wing Labour Party may look to scrap government guidance telling schools to teach children that there are only two biological sexes, which would easily be overturned given the failure of the Conservative government to put the policy into law. Shadow education secretary Bridget Phillipson said that if elected — as is widely predicted to happen — a Labour government would review guidance from Rishi Sunak’s government which told educators to refrain from teaching far-left gender ideology as a fact. This included the theory that people can somehow be born into the wrong body, can change their sexual identity, or...

@PolitlcsUK NEW: Nigel Farage responds to his comment calling the King a "stupid, eco-loony" "Well, he wasn't the King then, and I can't speak ill of the monarch obviously. But he did used to say that carbon dioxide was a 'pollutant', which I thought was a very stupid comment"

There is a favorite Fleet Street story about the legendary Sun editor Kelvin MacKenzie. While editing the paper, he discovered that his horoscope writer was recycling copy. He decided to dispense with her services in a letter that opened: “As you will no doubt have foreseen…”You do not have to hold claims to being a mystic to predict certain things. The results of this month’s European Union elections were easily predictable, as was the response from much of the British media. As I uncannily prophesied in last week’s column, the BBC’s Europe editor, Katya Adler, went with:…There is a favorite...

The Swiss National Bank on Thursday trimmed its key interest rate by 25 basis points to 1.25%, continuing cuts at a time when sentiment over monetary policy easing remains mixed among major economies. Two thirds of economists polled by Reuters had anticipated the SNB would decide in favor of a 25-basis-point-cut to 1.25%. The Swiss franc weakened in the wake of the announcement, with the Euro gaining 0.3% and the U.S. dollar up 0.5% against the Swiss currency at 8:55 a.m. London time. Following the Thursday decision, the Swiss central bank pegged its conditional forecast for inflation at 1.3% for...

The 2000-year-old tipple was found in a burial urn mixed with cremated human remains. Discovered in Carmona in the southern region of Andalusia, the wine is believed to be the oldest ever found and was preserved in liquid form. Analysis of the liquid inside the urn concluded that it was white wine despite its dark colour, as it did not contain the polyphenols found in grape skins used to produce red wine. In a report published about the discovery, scientists added that the liquid was similar to the Fino wines produced in the same region today.

Environmental protesters sprayed paint on Britain’s Stonehenge on Wednesday, with orange marks covering some of the stones of the prehistoric megalithic structure on the eve of the summer solstice celebrations. Two people have been arrested on suspicion of damaging the ancient monument, police said in a statement. “This is extremely upsetting and our curators are investigating the extent of the damage,” English Heritage, the charity that manages Stonehenge, said on X. Stonehenge remains open, it added. The monument, one of Britain’s most visited tourist spots, also holds spiritual significance and attracts thousands of revellers, spiritualists and tourists during the summer...

The Government is to use charter flights to deport groups of people no longer permitted to remain in the State. On Monday, Minister for Justice Helen McEntee said the launch of a procurement process for the flights would ultimately give gardaí (police) more options in executing deportations. “The capacity of deportation and return processes are essential elements of any immigration system,” she said. […] The move comes at a time of mounting pressure on Government to deal with the issue of immigration, alongside an inability to provide sufficient accommodation. …

Reflections on the EU election. This is perhaps nothing more than wishful thinking, but my sense is that in Europe, when it comes to Islam, things may just possibly be coming increasingly to a head. I suspect that the monstrous Hamas attacks of October 7 awakened the imaginations of millions of Europeans who, although on some level surely knowing better, had lulled themselves into passivity with the notion that those surly-looking Muslims living in their midst, some of whom occasionally spoke out loud about conquering Europe in the name of their prophet, couldn’t possibly mean what they said or be...

Some 12 kilometers from Minusinsk, near the settlement of Bystraya, is one of many locations in Russia's eastern regions where natural gas bubbles up out of the ground. In the summer, locals bring sausages and other food to cook over the open "eternal flames." Although Russia is a global leader in the production of natural gas, millions of residents of its coldest, easternmost regions remain unconnected to gas lines. . Across the region each winter, officials regularly issued air-quality warnings because of the smog from burning coal. In 2021, children from Minusinsk donned gas masks and recorded video appeals in...

Just as surely as British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's July 4th election call gives power to the Labour Party in the UK French President Emmanuel Macron's call for National Assembly elections June 30th and July 7th will give power to the "Far-Right" National Rally. Why make this shocking move on the heels of last Sunday's National Rally victory in the European Parliament elections? Perhaps the answer lies in the fact that the muscle of the Right is needed in government to combat the Left which has Anti-Israel and Anti-Ukraine War elements among it. Macron's Liberal Capitalism would be better served...

You gotta love this part here where Macron just very subtly nods to Meloni, like: "Yeah, he's doing it again. Go get him."

It is now little more than a “developing country”. Its stock market is a “junk shop” selling old tat. And its reputation as a place to do business has “never been so bad’. In the middle of the UK’s dismal election campaign, it would be easy to imagine that Britain was the country under discussion. But Theodor Weimer, the head of the once mighty Deutsche Börse, was describing his native Germany. And he was absolutely right. After a series of catastrophic policy mistakes by centrist leaders, there is no way back for Germany – and its decline is only going...
