Trump would beat Sanders in 2020 matchup, says Obama campaign manager
Fox News ^ | April 19, 2019 | Sam Dorman

Jim Messina, campaign manager for former President Barack Obama's successful re-election campaign, predicted that Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., would be unable to counter President Trump's economic messaging and would therefore lose in a 2020 electoral matchup.

"Bernie Sanders is unlikely going to be able to stand up to the constant barrage that is Donald Trump on economic issues," Messina said during the Powerhouse Politics podcast this week.

Messina contended that swing voters were "incredibly focused on the economy" and that winners of the last five presidential elections were those candidates who were able to "win" the economic argument with swing voters.

Sanders already leads the pack of declared, Democratic candidates in polling and fundraising but his poll numbers trail former Vice President Joe Biden, whom Messina campaigned for and is expected to announce his 2020 bid on Wednesday.

He’d beat everybody running. Those with real chance of winning are sitting out 2020

Sanders gets elected.
Everyone quits their jobs because the government will take care of us all.
We all live happily ever after.

If you're a young charismatic Democrat, why would you run in 2020 when you have a good chance of winning the whole thing in 2024? Or else, you could end up like John Edwards. Not exactly a household name nowadays but he had a promising future back in '04.

Karl Rove said Sanders would (maybe) win.

Who am I to believe? Is this person trying to sabotage Sanders, or is Rove trying to build up a loser?

I hope so too, but I think if somebody came from left field who was half articulate and semi-serious about taking on the position of President, jumped in late enough to escape vetting (like Obama did) they could put on a good show (like a Mark Cuban for example) A leftist would have deep state immunity, get free opposition research courtesy of the FBI, Vote cheating and the MSM advantage too.

It could converge like the perfect storm. It would be a clash of the Titans. Trump wouldnt go down easy, even after taking a beating constantly the last four years

When you're a booty bandit you don't have to worry about a love child putting you in an awkward position. Buttplug will gain the name recognition he needs for 20214. The problem for Republicans is they have no one like that in the bull pen for 2024. I see 2024 going to the Rats. Which is going to be really bad for the country.

If the election were held today, there's no question in my mind that Trump would win. But it's not held today. It's 17+ months away. A lot can happen in 17 months. If the economy were to suddenly tank --and don't think that there aren't some Soros types including Georgie Boy himself who might try to manufacture a crisis -- voters could respond by doing crazy things and electing some total loser like Bernie. It's happened before.

Rove’s one single opportunity in life came with Bush, and he hasn’t done much of anything since then. If you go and talk to working-class democrats in rural areas of the US...they just aren’t buying into Bernie’s chatter. I would take a guess that a quarter of the general Democratic voters will either stay home, or vote for Trump, if their nominee is Bernie.

I would agree...the college crowd will be all hyped-up and pro-Bernie.

You run to raise money. Then keep it after you drop out. Great way to openly get bribes.

If Sanders wins the nomination he picks a new DNC chair and those at the top. That is what the Establishment fears. They are going to go after him hard.

The reason they run is in what you said. They are not a “household name” right now, and being in the Presidential sweepstakes will get them there.

My thought also! Bernie in an odd way is like Trump on the Rats side. That is also why Biden is coming in! He knows his chances at this time is slim, but the establishment Rats what to keep control of the party.

Who are you thinking of? With roughly 20 declared candidates, I thought just about every prominent and not-so-prominent Democrat was already announced as a 2020 candidate.

I’m not thinking of anybody in particular, I just know that when there is a strong Republican incumbent, those with no chance will use the opportunity to get their name out to raise their profile and to raise funds for future political use. This goes for the other way around as well, when the incumbent is a strong Democrat, only weak Republicans will generally run and for the same reasons.

Nobody, who is a quality candidate, will unnecessarily take a loss when they know they would probably lose anyway. There is no point in taking an unnecessary loss when that’s going to cost you with supporters and the ability to raise funds.

I understand what you’re saying. It makes strategic sense.

But, I’m not sure which Democrat fits the mold right now.

There’s likely some photogenic and politically savvy Dem out there waiting for promotion. I just don’t know who it is. Perhaps a as-yet undiscovered Tulsi Gabbard type who is waiting for 2024 to run against an aging, establishment Pence?

But no particular prospect comes to mind.
