Schumer: Trump should pick 'mainstream' candidate to fill Supreme Court vacancy
The Washington Examiner ^ | November 20, 2016 | Ryan Lovelace

Incoming Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said he wants President-elect Trump to select a "mainstream" candidate to fill the Supreme Court vacancy created by the death of Justice Antonin Scalia.

Asked by NBC on Sunday whether he was comfortable filibustering any Trump nominee for the court, Schumer dodged answering the question directly.

"I hope that President Trump picks a mainstream candidate," Schumer said. "A mainstream candidate is somebody you may not agree with on every issue, but basically believes in precedent."

NBC's Chuck Todd interrupted Schumer and asked, "What does that mean? Can he nominate somebody in your mind that is, say, [Texas Sen.] Ted Cruz? Is he too conservative for you?"

"I'm not going to get into specific candidates, but we'd hope it would be mainstream," Schumer answered. "If it is mainstream, you have to remember, the last four nominees, two from President Bush, two from President Obama, got bipartisan support on the bench. If he doesn't nominate a mainstream candidate, we're going to go at him with everything we have, or her. Go at the candidate with everything we've got because this is so, so important."

Schumer expressed a willingness to work with Trump on issues where the president-elect and Democratic Party agree in a series of Sunday morning interviews. Trump responded by praising Schumer on Twitter.

Trump was not elected to put main stream or moderate judges on SCOTUS.

The people elected Trump to stack the court with conservative judges.

He will put two or three on the court before he is done.

The liberals need to rejoin reality. They lost, and lost big and to quote one of their own, Elections have consequences....

What would hillary have done? I suspect trump will select someone less extreme relative to the political middle than hillary would have selected.

If I were President-elect Trump, I would announce that I will not consider anyone for the USSC with Harvard or Yale connections. This would be a great way to tell the political elites to take a hike. There’s a new sheriff in town.

"Somebody you may not agree with on every issue, but basically believes in precedent."

That means, someone who can make the constitution say anything the dimocraps want it to say....

how about believing in the Constitution, not the precedent .

Anyone notice how Clinton not once ever said she would appoint judges which will follow the Constitution?

> I know its jest, but he is 67 years old. hell no!!!! Nobody over 50.

Why nobody over 50.
67 is young in my family.
Most of my relatives lived and worked until 90 or more.
My uncle recently gave up his medical practice (93 yo).
My mom’s 87 yo sister still jogs.
In the 50s, my grandparents were taking care of a very old cousin who fought in the Civil War, i.e., I actually got to meet a Civil War Veteran (111 yo when he passed, Confederate).
