Democratic Sen. Carlyle Begay is now a Republican. The Ganado lawmaker announced Monday morning his switch to the Republican Party, a move he said is an extension of his independent streak at the Arizona Capitol. But Democrats categorized the move as no surprise for a lawmaker who often bucked his party to vote in favor of Republican-led bills.

This is great news. Cejay is one of the most interesting Republicans out there. He’s one of the few Native American Republican officeholders and he represents a district which usually votes for Democrats. He already has crossed party lines on many votes, so the switch was not a huge shock.
Begay is a common Navajo name.
Will McCain even things up?
A blow to Democrats?
It probably is a body blow to republicans too.
Maybe he is taking the place of a conservative, and will simply parrot and continue to vote with the Dems

We’ll see if his personal popularity is enough to get him reelected.
Senator Begay already breaks with his fellow Democrats on a regular basis. State liberals already have complained about him. I expect he’ll become even more conservative now.
