The Republicans’ Ugly Revolt
The New York Times' Sunday Review ^ | October 10, 2015 | Frank Bruni

Posted on 10/10/2015 1:22:37 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

OVER the last two decades, through Bob Dole and George W. Bush and John McCain and Mitt Romney, it has become an article of faith that the Republican presidential nominee is a person blessed by, or acceptable to, the party’s establishment, meaning the elders, the bankers, the cool heads, the deep pockets.

There’s mess along the way — brief tantrums by restive voters, fleeting triumphs by renegade candidates — but order and obeisance in the end.

Is this the election cycle when that changes?

The twilight of the Republican elite?

Donald Trump’s stamina and the ascendance of Ben Carson and Carly Fiorina suggest as much. The three of them, who have led national polls since mid-September, aren’t just political outsiders, which is the label hung on them most frequently. They’re instruments of protest by Republican voters unwilling to heed the prompts and protocol that they’re expected to.

For Republicans (and perhaps for Democrats, too) this is a season of rebellion, as the chaos in the House of Representatives vividly illustrates. A consequential share of the Republican majority there have made it clear that they will not bow to precedent, not follow any conventional script, not have anyone foisted on them. No, they’ll do the foisting themselves....

This entire screed relies upon the false presumption that Trump will drop out.

Even then, Cruz is such an unlikable fellow that I doubt he would be the beneficiary.

No WE don’t. You might—but I want Cruz.

Of course if Trump get the nomination, which I don’t doubt, I’ll hold my nose and vote for him.

Rebellion does not have a “season”,
rebellion has a “reason”,
And the reason, is TREASON!

Yeah I noticed the mention of Fiorina as in the same league as Donald Trump and Ben Carson too without any mention of Ted Cruz.

Although Ted’s polling numbers are low, his fundraising remains strong. He’s much more acceptable to the base than Carly will ever be.

The fervor over Trump is no different than usual here

Bush post 9-11

Palin...,good lord the mania over Palin who never ran anyhow

The Cain....geez

Newt for a week or two ...which I liked ok

Then pretty much Cruz and Carson till Trump stole their thunder

It’s just how it is here

Like high school

Very few who don’t indulge

If Ted were at 35% in such a huge field folks would be pimping him just the same

Carson being magic skin shade it would be even worse

The establishment may yet kill Trump and we’ll see won’t we

I’m sure under no illusions about any of them

Trump is Trump

Carson is clueless sometimes

Cruz missteps in a PC way I could do without sometimes

They are all imperfect but Trump fights and doesn’t apologize yet

When he dies it’s over for him

Yea, I didn’t care for that one but it doesn’t imply amnesty without other info. he said something similar during the debate - or some interview- about work Americans won’t do. That’s the pet phrase of pro-amnesty people.

He needs to come clean and answer directly.

No need to be snotty.

Besides all that comes up is people repeating what I just read.

More direct information from him is needed, but in the meantime I’ll err on the conservative side and back the only candidate willing to be upfront and get rid of these criminals.

I really respect Dr. Carson as a man and a surgeon.
As a Presidential candidate he has been inconsistent on the one issue that will decide our fate as a nation.

He seems to be talking out of both sides of his mouth about this issue. He says we must retain the rule of law and then says we need them here.
We have 93 million people not working. I don’t buy it.

Minimum standard for the next President must be upholding the rule of law.

I’m not being snotty.

I am telling you that’s all you have to do to find out what his position on amnesty is. Perhaps I shuoldn’t have said educate yourself. I apologize for that.

If you also enter the search “Ben Carson amnesty” on Free Republic’s search bar, you will also see a number of posts on the subject.

From what I can see he is what I would characterize as extremely squishy on the matter, which isn’t good enough for me.

I am with Trump on this when he says “They gotta go”.

That’s it, nothing else. I don’t feel sorry for them, I don’t feel obligated to them, I don’t care about jobs that Americans supposedly won’t do, they simply have to go.

If Ben, or anyone else, cannot come to that position, then they cannot have my vote.

I am not going to let my government give away my country to anyone in the world who wants it.

No way in Hell.

WE WANT TRUMP!!!

Speak for yourself. You want a guy who only 7 years ago was an enthusiastic supporter of Barack Obama, and only TWO years ago helped to put DNC chairman and campaign honcho for Hillary and Bill Clinton, Terry McAuliffe, in the Virginia governor's mansion.

You're pinning a lot of political hopes on an apolitical charismatic showman.

I want Ted Cruz.

He’s so “unlikeable” that he beat the establishment candidate in one of our largest and most important states. He’s so “unlikeable” that he was chosen over thousands of others to be the clerk for Chief Justice the United States Supreme Court and a Judge on the US Court of Appeals and later won the Bush vs Gore case, keeping the madman Al Gore out of the White House. What have you done that comes anywhere close to just those few accomplishments?

We should be well versed in good policy and where Trump stands on it. Even the top three issues, and his views would be helpful, but we should be ready to answer questions on a number of others in general or better yet, more terms.

Carson and Fiorina are amnesty candidates and Trump loves him some single-payer health care.

If we’re going to have a revolt, let’s at least revolt for a conservative candidate.
